Nature is nearly always equal to any situation. F;r example, a good many years ago someone discover- ed that the flowers of certain plants of the clirysanthomilm- family had deadly effects when they were brought into contact with insects. True, the powder is still used, but the more common form now empoyed extensively as a means of ccntrolng insects, is a solution of the active principle of the pyrethrum flower which may be diluted with water to make an efficient and inexpensive spray ma- terial. Such solutions are now avail- able under a variety of trade names, and they offer the advan- tages of being prepared at a defi- nite strength, so that all one needs to do to m'x a. quantty of spray is to follow the directions.

Besides being poisonous to nearly all fomis of insect life, pyrethrum sprays have the added advantage of being perfectly harmless to hu- mans. It is quite safe to use these pyrethrum sprays on garden pro- due that is to be eaten in a few days.

Rhubarb Pic

3 cups sweetened cooked rhubarb it cup cake crumbs

155 cups chopped dates

1 cup whipped cream

'1 large baked pie shell

Simmer rhubarb and dates until blended about ten minutes. Add cake crumbs, cool and pour into pie shell. Cover with whipped cream.

Pineapple Cheese Pie

2 eggs

1 cup cottage cheese

1 cup granulated sugar

3 teaspoons cornstarch

2 cups milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup crushed pineapple

1 tablespoon butter

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 large, unbaked pie shell

Beat eggs, add cottage cheese and acam till lumps are removed. Add sugar and cornstarch and blend well. To this add milk and vanilla. Spread crushed pineapple on bot- tom of pie shell and pour in cot- tage cheese mixture. Dot with but- ter and sprinkle with cinnamon. Bake in hot‘ oven. (450 degrees F.) for about ten minutes, then reduce t4) moderate (350 degrees Iii and bake till it puffs.

It is easy to have bloom in the Perennial Border in spring and early summer, but after the delph- inlums are over there seems to be a lack of flowers in most gardens; At the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, we try to have something in bloom all season. Yellow coreop- sis and brown and yellow gaiilardia will bloom all season if the" seed- heads are cut ofl. Dracocephalum has a purple flower and blooms in August. Sedum spectabile and its varieties are pinkish and bloom late. The foliage is bluish green and quite attractive all summer. These are all suitable for the front of the border. A useful pink flower is Lav- aters, kashmeriana (l... thuringiaca. Siberian form is similar.) It grows 5 to 6 feet and blooms all July. Sid- alcea also has pink flowers and a long season of bloom.
