REPUGNANCE TO OSTENTATION—HIS IMPER- TURABILITY — AN INCIDENT OF FORT DONELSON.
Gen. Grant’s repugnance to anything like snobbishness or ostentation was one of his marked characteristics. Shortly after he settled down in New York city a noted artist desired to paint his portrait. Con- sent being gained, the artist called at the house for his first sitting. He is a man whose elegant deportment and aristocratic bearing are among his prominent charac- teristics, The General received his guest
to the parlor, where an easel was prepared and the work begun. There waa a knock atthe door. ‘‘Come in,” said the General. It proved to be Mrs. Grant. She wanted money for marketing. Tl-e artist struck an attitude of heroic indifference at the easel, while he watched the General pull out an old-fashioned, faded and much worn pocket-book. It was tied with a black string, which he slowly removed, got the money, and handed some to his wife. The black string, the veteran wallet, the filthy lucre, or something in the transaction itself, shocked the sensibilities of the artist, if the painful expressions on his mobile face told the truthful tale, but he managed to resume work, It was a warm day. The artist perspired. Presently he went across the room and pulled a bell-cord.
‘‘What do you want?’ asked General Grant,

The General got up from his chair and walked out. In a moment or two he return- ed with a goblet of ice-water for the thirsty; artist, who was so confused that he evcn) forgot to express his thanks. The Generali paid not the slightest attention to his con- fusion, but went on with the sitting as if nothing had happened.
One of the stories of Grant's imperturb- ability was told after he had taken charge of the Army of the Potomac, A visitor to the army called on him one morning. The General was smoking and talking to bis staff officers. The caller inquired of him : “General, if you flank Lee and get between him and Richmend will you not uncover Washingion and leave ita prey to the enemy!” General Gran: let a big wave of smoke roll out of his mouth as he replied in an indifferent way, ‘“‘Yes, I reckon so.” Encouraged in his line of attack on ths citad@of information,the visitor continued}: ‘General, don’t you think Lee can detach sufficient force from his army to reinforce Beauregardjand overwhelmn Butler! ” *‘Not a doubt of it,” said the General as calmly as before, while he knocked the ashes from his cigar with his little finger. ‘The shocked face of the querist was evidence of -his perturbation of spirit over Grant’s replies, as he propounded a third inquiry: ‘‘General,_ is there not danger that Johnston may come up and reinforce Lee, so that the latter will swing around and cut your communi- cations and seize your supplies /”
‘* Very likely,” said Grant, as he pufied another wave of smoke out of his mouth so as to form a series of rings. The visitor hastened back to Washington full of the horrible fate that was admittedly pending over Grant and the army, while Grant and the army went on to Richmond.

Gen. Grant could obey orders as well as give them. He walked down on the wharf at City Point one day, absorbed in thouglit. The inevitable cigar was in his mouth. A negro guard touched his arm and said :— ‘* No smoking on the dock, sah.” ‘* Are those your orders?!’ asked the General, looking up. ‘‘ Yes, sah,” replied the watchman, courteously but decidedly. ‘* Very good orders,” said Grant, as he threw his cigar in the water.
The aitack of Fort Donelson, which es- tablished Grant's fame, is said to have been decided upon by a simple circamstance, The day before the attack most of the troops had marched a long distance, part of it in a bitter cold night. A council of war was called to determine whether an im- mediate attack ehould be made, or whether the troops should have a day of rest. The oflicers were in favor of rest. Grant said nothing, but appeared absorbed in thought. Presently, when every one bad expressed
;an opinion, he said ; ‘*There was a deserter

Grant looked in his haversack and then asked : ‘‘ Where are you from ?’’ ‘*Fort Donelson,” ‘‘Got six days rations in your haversack, have you not?” ‘“‘Yea, sir.” ‘‘When were they served out?” ‘* Yesterday morning.” The same to all the troops?” ‘Yes, sir.” ‘*Geotle- mep, troops do not have six days’ rations served out to thein in a fort if they mean to stay there. These men mean to retreat— not to fight. We will attack at once.”
The North-west Rebellion.

Tn an instructive and fairly written paper on *‘ The Half-breed and Indian Insurrec- tion,” contributed by the Rev. John Mc- Lean, of Blood reserve, Fort McLeod, Al- berta, to the August numberof the Cana- dian Methodist Magazine, the author says, with regard to the causes of the trouble :— ‘* It is unjust to ascribe all the miciakes to the perverseness of one or two individuals, even though sirong assertions may be sustained by the voice of the peeple. Phe gocd done by the department seems to be lost sight of at the present time, as the evils arising from many causes are being especially ferreted out. Perfee- tion in any system is not gained in a day. By the assistance of the department, the Indians have made progress in agriculture. Men who in former years regarded labor as degrading,have now learned to toil. Schools have been established and satisfactory pro- gress made in education. The physical and well-being of the Indian has been attended to with a good measure of success.”

: Crop Reports.
The experience of the Northwest two seasons ago when the prevalence of unusual meteorological conditions caused consider- able damage to the wheat crop, showed the disadvantage of a country being dependent on even so splendid a cereal. Fortunately what has been jJearnei in Minnesota and Dakota, where the climate is of the same general character as in the Canadian terri- torigs, proves that diversified farming is at- tended with great success. The crop re- ports from these States just published in- dicate that in certain localities where the spring wheat has been a failure, oats, barley, flax, hay or root ereps have turned out magnificently. Hey seems never to fail in that region, the natural grasses of the country being amorg the finest and most nutritious known, Of late,too, corn-raising has been attended with fare success, good returns been obtained on ground that ten years back was generally provounced un- adapted for that branch of agriculture. A Petrified Giant.
Two men have recently discovered in a cave near Victoria, B. C., what seems to be the upper part of the body of a petrified giant. The material is of the hardest kind of granite, with rims of quartz running through it- The face is almost perfect. The eyes and nose have fallen in, and the ears have gone, leaving holes. The riba can be seen and counted in the stone. The arms are broken off below the shoulders, and the legs at the thighs. Several parts are perfect, and show the body to be that of a largely developed man about ten feet high. At the places where the legs and arms are broken off there is a cylindrical shaped substances of darker color than the external part, which is supposed to repre- sent the bone.

Riel’s Wife Distracted with Grief and Utterly Destitute.
When Mrs. Riel, who resides a few miles out of Winnipeg, heard of her husband's sentence, she became frantic and rushed from her house to the woods, where she hid. Sbe was only partially clothed ana in bare feet, and was nearly dead when found by her friends. So terrible is the shock she may never recover herreason. A great deal of sympathy is felt for her and her children, and a subscription list has been started for them, as they are pensiless.
Return of Tuttle’s Comet.
A cable message received at the Harvard College Observatory from Keil, Prussia, an- nounces the discovery at Nice, France, of Tuttle’s comet of 1858. This comet was originally seen by Tuttle, assistant, Harvard College Observatory, and is knewn to be periodical and its return has been expected fora year.
