But when we sought to scnd the products of Canadian farms into Great Britain, what llreferchcra did we get? Absolutely none. It is true that our butter and eggs, bacon and beef, entered the British market free, but so did similar products from Denmark, Holland and other European coun- tries. And these countries were hundreds of miles distant from the markets of Great Britain but we were thousands of miles. So we ivcrn handicapped by freight rates. IL handicap that we could not over- conic. Today when we enjoy a pref- civncc of ten per ccnt on these products entering the British mer- kct we use still only about on a par with the other countries to which I lirtve referred, when trans- portation charges are taken into cons-ki-cration. U. S. Farmers‘ Attitude

The farmer in the Unlfl fiat/ts is just as jealous of a home market for his own farm products as he ivas in 1930 when the Hawley- Smoot tariff wns put into effect to protect him. Wc must be fair about these things; up cannot blame the United States. farmers for that. It is the duty of the American gov- emment to protect the American farmer. It is the duty of this gov- ernment, m far as it reasonably can, to prnfiect the Canadian farm- er. And why not? I have often ltcnrd the statement made that the United States is our natural mar- lcct. "I was saying that in addition to producing all the crops that are produced in Canada the farmers of the United States produce other crops that are not grown hE-‘B 8! all. Only a limited quantity of corn is grown in Canada. chiefly for ensilsge purposes, while corn is one of the major crops of the United States. In any trade agreement that may be made between Canada and the United States there should be a swap-off. It is true that they require certain commodities at cer- tain seasons of the year. and cer- tain other commodities at all times, that are produced in Canada, -but on the other hand there are certain things which we require from them. even among farm products. In con- nection with these commodities we might have a. reciprocal agreement which would work to the advantage of both nations. A matter of that kind must be worked out in a sen- sible, logical, levelheaded way, rather than as the former govern- ment tried to work it out.

J.. where Bruno Richard Hauptmnnn was on trial. for his life. .\ t they were not in- terested in the development of the case any more than they would be interested in a good detective story. They were interested hf knowing whether the jury should decide that the German carpenter and ex-ma- chine-gunner had kidnapped and murdered an especial baby-the in- fant son of Col. Charles A. Lind- bergh, the most famous flier in the world.

Millions of words poured out ov- er the telegraph and telephone wires from Flemington to travel in les- sening numbers all around the globe and to tell the people or Asia and Africa as well as those in Eng- land and Soviet Russia what the state charged agalnstjiauptmann and how he answered.

Briefly the state charged on the night of March 1, i932, Hauptmann stole Charles Lindbergh Jr., from his bed in the Colonel's house in Sourlands, N. J.. murdered the child sent railsom noitos and collected $50,000 in a cemetery in the Bronx. New York, through an intermedi- ary, Dr. John F. "Jafsie" Condon. The state asserted that thereafter Hauptmann blossomed out as a Wall Strcnt plunger and that he was trapped by agents when is passed a. bill the serial numbt d which corresponded to one of the numbers in the ransom bills.
