Polly had been content to sit in her doorway and pretend not to notice Flip but all the time she was keeping careful watch of him. He would make short rushes at her as if to try to pull her out of ciosely. She was hoping that he would rush close enough for her to suddenly jump out and get hold of him. Polly Chuck wasn't afraid of that small Dog.

Now Polly wasn't really looking for trouble. She really hoped that Flip would grow tired of his fun and stop bothering her. But Flip didn't get tired. Whenever he could think of nothing else to do he would trot over to have fun bark- ing at Polly. At long last. she had had enough of it. She decided to do something about it. So this morning when Flip appeared. she wasn't in her doorway. She wasn't even on her doorstep. She was out in the Old Orchard. There was no place for her to hide, nothing to get under or behind. She was right out in the open.

When he saw her, Flip was so surprised that he stopped short for a moment and simply stared. Then as he prepared to rush at her, he had another surprise. Before he could start Polly Chuck was rush- ing straight at him and she look- ed twice as big as she had ever looked to him before.

Flip isn't a coward. For a small

g Dog he has plenty of courage. But

he was so take: by surprise now that he turned and ran. Polly Chuck ran, too. She wasn't yet too fat to run. For a little way she was right at Flip's heels. Such a an t as there was on the part of the birds of the Old Orchard. This was really exciting, and they were delighted at seeing Flip being made to run. Bowser the Hound saw Flip come racing her doorway. She was watching out of the Old Orchard into the dooryard at Farmer Brown's. He

Cucumbers Are Picked In A Hurry

CHATHAM, Ont. (CF) a- The back-breaking job of cucumber picking has been eased for work- ers on the farm of Omer Cartier near here.

The "pickle picker" devised by Mr. Cartier allows six workers to sit in comfort while they are drawn along the field.

Basically the invention is I tractor with a long steel frame- work along the back. From the frame six plywood seats are hung on steel straps. The seats are within a few inches of the ground and those picking can easily reach. the cucumber vines.

The seats are spaced along the frame so that two workers can work from each cucumber row. Each perch also has space for a bushel basket.

On the front of the tractor is a wagon-like platform. This is used no cary the full baskets as well as extras.

The tractor-driven contraption moves at a slow pace. the work- ers picking cucumbers within reach of the hand. Each picker averages W: bushel basket: I row.

Flip said nothing. He didn't want to admit that he was afraid to go back. But he had suddenly realized that Polly Chuck was not the least bit afraid of him. Some how, she looked much bigger than he remembered her when she used to live there before. He really did not want to fight.
