The Local Government.

ir is reported that the Local Govern- ment have determined to withstand and insult public opinion to the bitter end, We have been unable to ascertain whether the report is true or untrue. But we have all along thought, and still think, that the Local Premier is a man of too much spirit to prolong his stay in a position in which he knows he is detestable, and to devour the sweets of office till, at the last, he dies like a poisoned rat ina hole. Asa Political Leader, the Local Premier is the niost unquestionable failure that ever guided an Administration in this Island. But we have yet to learn that he is so mean as to cling tenacionsly to the shreds of power left him, in despite of the well understood wishes of the people.

Moreover, has the Hon. John_ F. Rob- ertson the face to remain in a Government which has been deliberately condemned by the electors he represents? We believe that, hardened as he is, he cannot and will not expose himself to the contempt and scorn of the men by whose suffrages he was, two years ago, elevated to power. The decisive defeat of the Government candi- date in Belfast should Robertson’s resignation a certainty. Not to speak of other members of the Adminis-

St. James’ Church.

Church was laid. ‘We have now the pleas-

ure of reporting it all but finished through- out—all but ready for the sacred uses for which it is intended. The new Church is certainly an improvement upon any Church heretofore built in the town ; and we sim- ply tell the plain truth when we say that the architects and builders who erected it, and the congregation who bear the expense deserve praise for what they have done.

The painting is very tasteful. The rafters and the vestibules and passages are in- grained oak. The columns are in grey stone and the gallery fronts are done in colors. The organ gallery is ornamented with French grey mouldings darkened. The spire is in slate and buff of different

shades.

The new church is situated near the site of the old one, on the corner of Pownal and It is built in the style of English Gothic of the decorated period of the Middle Ages. The elevation ef the building forms two fronts, having a tower and spire on the angle. The tower and spire thus tappear to be the central mass of the building. The gable front on Pownal Street has a pointed entrance porch, with deep recessed moulded arch and pillars. Over the porch is a large traceried window. The front on Fitzroy Street has a projecting gable, finishing against the main roof. There is a moulded arched doorway in the side of the tower, and one on the western angle. The building is construct- ed of Wallace freestone—in the main part, of walls laid in random coursed rubble. The facing stones, of buttresses, windows, etc., are of Isldnd stone. The arches are in alter- nate blocks of red and gray stone. The floor hne of the building is five feet above the sur face line. This space is built of red Island stone, left quarry-faced. Each face of the building is about twenty feet from the street. The main walls are one foot eight inches thick ; the lower walls, two feet eight inches. The building is in the form of a vane, with high-rocfed aisles on each side. The inside root of vane is part of a sexagon in form, and covered with sheeting. ‘The roof is supported by four pillars on each side of the vane, separating vane and ,aisles. The two centre pillars in each row are larger and wider apart than the others. This arrangement forms a large central arch in each side of the building, with two small ones at each side of the large arch. The pulpit is placed in the side of the building, instead of the end, and under one of the large arches. The choir gallery is above and behind the pulpit, under a large mould plaster arch. ‘There are three spacious entrances to the church—one in the front porch, one in the tower, and one in the western angle. A gallery runs round the two ends and across one side of the church. The

Mr. Brecken

The Montreal Gazette publishes the fol- lowing concerning Mr. Brecken:—

‘*A lawyer by profession, he has devoted himself more to politics than ordinar practice. For a great many years, he filled

An officer of the Ameer of Afghanistan at Abinuojie, lately refused to allow the Bri- tish mission to Cabul to go through the ‘Khyber Pass, and crowned the heights which command the pass with his followers. After a three hours’ interview with the ofticer, in which he warned him that his act would be regarded as an act of the Ameer himself, Major Cavagnari, com- manding the advanee escort of the Mission, returned to Jomrad and the Mission withdrew to Peshawar. The Mission will now be withdrawn.

[t is fully recognized that the Ameer of Afchanistan is merely a puppet of Russia. ‘The question will consequently cease to be treated from an Indian standpoint, and be- comes avery serious problem of English foreign politics. ‘he immediate object of the Viceroy is to make it clearly under- stood that he has no guarrel with the Afghan people, and to win over the border tribes. Major Cavagnari has repeatedly warned the Afghan oflicers that the Ameer will be held responsible. The officer, in the presence of two Indian princes attached to the Mission, has expressed an unflinch- ing determination to forcibly resist the passage of the Mission. There is no doubt that he is acting under full instructions from the Ameer, as two of the Ameer’s re- sponsible officers, who are also believed to be in direct communication with the Rus- sian Embassy, have recently arrived at Abi- nyid. The Russian envoys are still residing at Cabul.

Sur,—I see by the report of the proceedings; of the City Council on Monday night, that they have discharged Henry Curtis from the position of Park Keeper. 1 hope the Council will reconsider their decision, as I am sure they will tind great difficulty in procuring the services of a person as capable as Mr. Curtis. He has shown skill and judgment in his en- deavors to convert a wilderness into a pleasant and beautiful place of recreation for our citi- zens ; and I consider it would be unfortunate if he should be displaced (unless for the graress reasons) and his position filled probably by some one far less qualified by education and experience to perform the duties of the office. There is a great deal still to be done in the matter of ornamentation, fencing, drives, &c., and I think the Park Committee will find themselves at a loss if they undertake the ne- cessary outlay without the assistance of a per- son in some degree experienced in the work. I feel sure the majority of visitors to the Park will agree in the opinion that Curtis is indus- trious and obliging, and that his management is as satisfactory as can be expected under the circumstances ; and I would urge the Council not to discharge him until they have provided a more competent successor. Dear Srr—-I must congratulate you on the very able manner in which you conducted the

{Examiner during the late political campaign

and also on the great victory achieved. The large majorities obtained by the Liberal-Con- servative members in Queen’s and King’s counties were owing chiefly to the powerful influence exercised by an independent ex- pression of the public questions of the day. Having carefully watched the Examiner for the last few months I must say that you con- tributed in no small degree towards bringing about the great reaction that has lately taken place in the public mind. Your able editorials, together with the reliable statements of your numerous correspondents, have made the Hx aminer a faithful exponent of public opinion. The veracity of your journal stands out in bold relief to the unwarrantable assertions and wilful misrepresentation of some of your con- temporary opponents of our Island press. To say that your Queen Square contemporary con- ducted the contest im the same free and dignified manner that characterized the Hx- aminer would be to insult the intelligence of a reading community. In fact that sheet has become so unreliable that it has ceased to ex- ercise any influence whatever over the popular mind. Not so with the Hxaminer. It has become a power in the land and assists materi. ally in moulding public opinion.

When the condition of our country became alarming—almost on the verge of bankruptey— through extravagance, bribery and a host of other evils, you, sir, nobly came to the rescue and took your stand as a faithful sentinel and warned the people of the disastrous results of pursuing such a reckless course. The people saw at once the great danger and they rallied

to raise, and the result has been—or will shortly be—the return of men to power who have their country’s interests at heart, and
