SEABIRDS IN TROUBLE? by Bruce Pigot

On October 27th, 1990, a Leach's Storm-Petrel resting on a lawn next to the gulf beach at Savage Harbour allowed an approach to 3 ft. before it flushed. It ran along the lawn, became airborne, and flew south with the wind. There was a strong onshore wind at the time.

Just inside the Park boundary at the mouth of Tracadie Harbour on November 22, 1990, a Dovekie on the shore tried to get airborne. It landed about 12 feet offshore and 50 feet down wind then swam south with the wind along the shore.

I walked to Dalvay and when I returned I saw no sign of it.

VOLUNTEERS TO WATCH OVER NATURAL AREAS by Geraldine Fitzgerald

A co-ordinator has been hired by the Island Nature Trust to develop a volunteer conservation warden program for eleven natural areas across P.E.I. It is a cooperative program with the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation. The Trust is looking for volunteers with a keen interest in natural areas and the outdoors. All wardens will be given first aid training, volunteer warden identification, and information kits that contain maps,-aerial photographs, fact sheets, and inspection forms for each natural area. Training will begin sometime in early January. Volunteers will be observing and reporting all activities that occur in the natural area during their periodic visits to the sites. Funding for the project has been provided by the Shell Environmental Fund, P.E.I. Wildlife Federation, and teh Island Nature Trust. No formal education in biology or environmental science is needed to participate. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer conservation warden should contact Geraldine Fitzgerald at the Island Nature Trust, 566-9150.
