Iu The Century there is an article ot “Edwin Booth In London,’’ by EK. H. House. In speaking of Irving’s action in appearing with Booth at the Lyccum Mr. House says:
Looking at all the possibilitie: of the case, I hold to the @epinion aow, as | did then, that irving risked more than people supposed—more, it may be, than he him self took into full reckoning. I will no# further enlarge upon what might have bappened to his disadvantage. As to his hope of gain, what was it? He could win approval for extending a consoling hand to a distinguished brother actor and help ing him to recover some of the equanimity he had lost through untoward circum stances, he could commend himself to the good will of the American public and set up a particular claim to its cordiality in case he should visit the United States, and he could identify himself and his os tablishment with a Shakesperean repre- sentation of uncommon nearness to per fection. Ido not see that there was any thing else to his side of the account. He certainly was not so weak as to imagine he would outshine Booth and add to his own reputation at the other’s expense Pecuniary benefit was out of the question The profits of the combination could not be Jarger than those of the regular Leyeum performances at ordinary prices.
There might bea certain pleasure in ‘taking the chances’’ of so novel an enter- prise. But Irving was not the sort of man to whom the excitement of a gambling operation would be especially alluring There is no evidence that he was moved by a single unworthy impulse. Though the trip to Amcrica may have been in his mind, it does not follow that he was sor didly influenced by expectations of a ma terial recompense for his hospitality. ij doubt indeed if he could have formed any eonception in advance of the acknowledg- ment in store for him. Few Enylishiver an understand without cenvincing testi- mony how intensely responsive fo a gen- erosity the American people are. Charlee Yoade knew it by intuition, as he seemed to know many other things which he had vever learned by experience. Irving’? knowledge came later.
If he was actuated by selfishness of any kind, it was on behslf of his theater, to maintain the supremacy of which was al- ways one of his dearest objects. An actor who is also a manager may care as much for the character of the productions at his house as for the personal elevation. Booth had once been thus inspired and had jost a fortune because he was more ambitious for the beautiful edifice he had created than for himself. To have it recorded that the most brilliant Shakespearean illustra tion of the day had been given under his auspices and within his own wails was doubtless worth inore to Irving than any calculation of present or future remunera tion—more probably than any renown he could hope to win by the impersonation of lago, which he was preparing with dilé vent study.

Interesting Relics.
A couple of interesting relics are in the possession of Albert 'Lurner of 1514 York street. One of them, and that which Mr. Turner prizes probably as much as any- thing he owns, isa brick from the old house that stood on Water street, New Cas- tle, Del., from 1687 antil torn down in 1894, and which was the home of the Dutch governors of the three lower coun- ties for 100 or more years. ‘The bricks of which the old house was constructed were brought over from Holland and, like all bricks of that time, were yellow in color. The relic Mr. Turner has, and which, by the way, is one of very few in existence, is in a good state of preservation, and, bar- ring its slightly crumbled edges, shows but few sizus of its two centuries and more. The other relic is a quaint old Reyo- lutionary sword, carried and used with deadly effect by Captain Cunda, Mrs. Tur- ner’s great-grandfather, at the famous battle of Bemis Heights.—Philadelphia Inguirer.

An Arbitrary Fee.
Victor Smith teils this story in the New York Press: ‘’My father was an old time lawyer. He tried a little case for his bootmaker and eautered on the books a charge of $15, the price of anew pair of boots. When the latter was de- livered, the accompanying bill was $30. A man of any other profession would have taken offense at the apparent effort to ‘‘do’”’ him, but the lawyer smilingly raised his fee to $45, and Mr. Smart Aleck Bootmaker had to pay. That was an arbitrary fee. Doctors sometimes en- joy the privileges of it.’’
