On Problems Of Adolescence

The frequency of undesirable behaviour, the seriousness of the offenses committed and the at- titude towards authority must all be considered carefully be- fore labelling any child as a delinquent, youth committee chairman Michael Hennessey told the Basilica Laymen’s as- sociation last night.

Guest speaker at the organiz- ation’s October meeting, Mr. Hennessey’s theme was “Toward a Better Understanding of Juv- enile Delinquency.”

In the absence of the presid- ent, M.F. Hagan, vice-president J. Elmer Blanchard presided.

Brief reports were delivered by the chairman of the enter- tainment and building commit- tees. Rt. Rev. Patrick McMahon, rector of the Basilica parish, spoke briefly after the group discussion which followed Mr. Hennessey’s talk.

The adolescent ‘years were perhaps the most <iifficult for both child and parent, Mr. Hen- nessey said.

He pointed gut that adolescence was normally characterized by a continual state of innerconfus- jon and anxiety; loyalty and de- votion to groups; and eagerness for adult acceptable.

“To help an adolescent we must make him understand that these problems and uncertainties are natural,” Mr. Hennessey said. “Parents must remember that

the child is not am adult.” z

He added that the adolescent's aeed for t should not imply a relaxation of dis- cipline.

The guest speaker recalled that. many were making many attempts to solve the problem of juvenile delinquency, but no one eure could be found.

“The solution requires an un- derstanding of the whole child and a genuine interest by the parents in the child,” he said.

Three questions were debated ‘ ‘by the several groups into which the large audience was divided: namely — Is there a juvenile de- linquency problem on P.E.1.? What ,are some of the ways in which parents cap help their ado- lescent children? In what way should the home be the cradle of | human personality?

The groups agreed that the de- linquency problem did not appear to be serious in this province. However .a growing and serious disregard for parental and school authority was noted.
