The foliowing certificates are a sufficient guarantee of the entire safety and efficiency of the Safety Lamp and Feeder :—~ We have hed an opportunity to test the Patent Safety Lamy and Lamp Feeder of Mr. John Newell, of this city, in regard to the measure of protection their construction affords. In the trials to which we subjected them, we endeavoured, without effect, to produce explosions of the vapor of the fluid mixed with air, and to burst them by the pressure of the vapor alone, The principle adopted by Mr. Newell is that of she well known Davy Lamp. Mr. John Newell, of Boston,-has exhibited to me a Lamp, and also containing vessels, furnished wiih wire gauze pro ec- ‘tors, upon the principle of Davy’s Safety Lamp for miners. He has used both those instruments before me with inflammable fluids, and in both, when set on fire, the flame was arrested by the wire gauze, which is coated with silver. If the instruments are fa:thfully constructed, and carefully attended to, so that the wire gauze do not suifer injury from corrosion, wear, or violence, | am of opinion that the protection will prove effectual against explosion, Nething short of this conviction would i- duce me to countenance the continued use of the burning fluids, so called,as | have thought they ought to be entirely discarded, if not prohibited from use: so frequent and dreadful are the accidents occasioned by ignorance and carelessness. In every case, glass lamps should ve given up, and those of metal sub- stituted, on account of the danger of fracture.
