Miles had traveled only far enough to have the strange, table mountain at. his back, when a tire punctured in the hot sand. The car had been going at such a pace that the pneumatic tore before the chauffeur could pull up. There was ho stcpncy, and Sheridan foresaw three-quarters of an hour delay.

He offered help, but the chauffeur politely refused, and Miles walked rr-stiussiy about, picking up desert crystals of odd shapes here and there to take back to Terry (she would like them) examining without much intcrr-st the low-growing wild flowers. and glancing at his watch.

H0 never went out of sight from the car, as he did not wish to wasfe a needless moment. But half an hour ymsscd and the chauffeur was silll frantically at work, dripping sweat in the afternoon heat, It, hnd occurred to Milcs to offer aid again. when ailothcr motor came bumping over the stony desert with its little patches oi rough grass.

It was a small, bright red car. and looked likc one he had seen in the gnrngc where hc had hirvd his. A momcng later the two occupmils- both mcn, and in front scat-caught sight of the stationary vehicle and slowed down.

Snooping into the garbage can to see if the potato parings are thin enough. Adding up the grocery bill so as to keep tab on the eggs and the canned goods. Never ceasing to twit her about her friends and her family, her clothes, her every personal peculiarity,

Being married to a man who regards marriage as thg. greatest misfortune that can befall a man, and who calls upon theworld to pity him in his suffering. Each sentence beat on Sheridan's ears as with a tap from a hammer. The force of the situation swept over him like the rush of a wave, and al- most carried him off his feet.
