A River on Fire,

’ The newspapers tell of a remarkable

display at a townon the Carpian sea

daring a visit of the Russian grand dukes. The governor of the town had conceived the idea of greeting his guests with a ‘‘sea of flame.’’ Accordingly he poured 2 quantity of naphtha on the water, where it spread out over an area of several imiles. After dark the inflam- matory tanee Was ignited, and the bluish flames swept away in all direc- jous over the dark waters of the sea. It

was a striking and impressive sizht, and yet it was by ro means new.

Nearly every week our own despised Chicago river becomes a ‘‘sea of flames,’’ but few people take the trouble of being

on hand to see the display. On the up- per stretches of the river, near Bridge- port, where the water grows foul from the accumulation of masses of sewage, acertain highly inflammable gas is gen- erated, and it rises in great quantities from the water in the form of bubbles. It is a favorite sport of the tuzmen and of others who visit that streich of the river to touch a match to the gas and Watch the flames shoot away in every direction over the water. The fire lasts only a few seconds, but the display is brilliant while it continues, and, strange as it may seem, the fire depart- ment has been called out more than ence to extinguish the blazing river.— Chicago Record.

I took cff my toat and put it over her head so she could not see the cruel blows with the ax. Then she commenced to beg me not to chop off herarm. By pure accident I found a piece of iron down in the water, and with this I managed to pry the seats far enongh epart to release her. It was the heaviest lifting of my life. We carried her off the car and as we reach- ed safety the car sank from sight. Two seconds later and we wonld all have been drowned.—-Kansas City Journal.

BURNETT OF TOMBSTONE.

County Cut Down His Pill, and He Ran the Court to Suit Himself,

A stormy life was that ended when old Jim Burnett was killed in Tomb- stone by William Greene—a life fuil cf experiences of the border kind that would supply material for 20 of the most thrilling of the yellow backed novels. The end wasin keeping with the life. Burnett, a justice of the peace in Pearce camp, had left his work in order to go down on the San Pedro riv- xr, 50 miles away, and blow out with ziaut powder the irrigating canal dam of his enemy, Greene. Below at ths time, probably unknown to Burnett, were two young girls, one a daughter of Greene. aged 18, and her friend from Bisbee. They were caught in the flood that followed the explosion and were drowned. The father learned of the presence of his foe, saddled his herse, rode over to Tombstone, found Burnstt on the main street and shot him down. The town stood behind Greere in his jeed. He has been admitted to light bail and will be acquitted if ever brought to trial.

Since Burnett’s death many are the tales being raked up about him. His was a singular personality. Strong willed and violent in temper, he es- pecially shone in a frentiercamp. It was, therefore, quite appropriate that he should have been elected justice of the peace in 1881 at Charleston, on the San Pedro, where the rich ores of Tomb- stone were at that time milled.

Charleston was then a howling camp, |

full of freighters, miners and the wool- iest of cowboys. The whisky sold wasn’t of the mildest brand, and consequently tribulation sate within the community and the justice’s court was always open. Burnett did a rushing business. At the end of three months he duly reported, as by law required, to the county super- visors, sending in his bill forthe amount due him from the county. The county fathers cut the bill down one-half. Bur- nett swore vigorously when he got the returns, but held no further communi- cations with the county seat. Another three months elapsing, the county treas- urer wrote Burnett to furnish his quar- terly statement. The reply came prompt- ly. It was: ‘‘The blazes with you! This court after this will be self sustaining.’’

And so it was, in great shape. Every time a cowboy would get exhilarated and shoot up the town the judge would fine him several hundred dollars and would pocket what remained after pay- ing his constables for the arrest.

One day old man Schwarta got excit- ed and killed a man. After the justice, an ex-officio coroner, had finished the inquest he had Schwartz haled before the bar, found him guilty of the crime aud fined him $1,000, Schwartz wanted to appeal the case, but Burnett won!d issue no papers on appeal. So the de- fendant sent up to Tombstone for Attor- ney Mark Smith, now delegate to con. gress from Arizona. Smith came dcwn at once and heard Schwartz’s tale of woe. It was a clear case of murder.

But the county never received any of that coin. Those who figured om the proposition said that Bernett came ort $22,000 ahead on his office in two yuurs. —Philadelphig Times.
