On the whole, in spite of a somewhat hard year in finascial circles, there is abundant reason on the part of St. James’ Congregation to ‘“‘thank God and take courage.”

Srr,—lIt is pitiable, first, to see the green- eyed monster, fangs and all, exhibited 80 plainly in the letter of ‘* Verity,” published in your issue of Saturday last; then farcical to read the deep concern (?) expressed by him In the suffering of his fellow-beings; and, lastly, humiliating toread such tack of knowledge in any member of my profession on the therapeu- tic action and application of a remedy now #0 universally telked and written about. Of course, what little information he has on the aubject can only have been gathered from newsp»per paragraphs He evidentlyis not awarethat there are books already publ‘shed on the snbject, and in them he will find that the ‘‘virvs” has been used internally with great success in the cure of tuberculosis. In them may also be found tens of cases recording the exact results obtained in each case, There ave hundreds of medical men besides “Koch” experimenting with this remedy, whom “Verity” never heard of, or probably never will, who, having had the courage of their convictions, have struck out a path of action for themselves, instead of blindly fo'lowing in the wake of Koch and others, as “Verity” and his ilk usually do in their profession, which no doubt accounts for the sad mediocrity of the average doctor.
Bat it is not my intention to teach my amiable persecutors anything about the sub- jet. If they had received me as gentlemen, instead of with “envy, hatred, malice, and all uncharitableness,” my library, experience and 200d will would have been at their disposal; but, under the circumstances, I must decline them any information or satisfaction, espect- ally when anonymously requested, and in such a mean, cowardly attack as ‘‘Verity” makes npon me in your valued paper of the 17th iust.
And now, Mr. Editor, let me say, once for all, I decline to be drawn into a controversy with unknown correspondents, and trust therefore that you will avoid the serious re- sponsibility of inserting anonymous attacks npon my professional reputation, by insisting ipen your sceptical and anxious enquirers signing their own names, and not hide their sneaking and libellous letters under a nom de plume «

Sik,— More important oceuption has pre- vented my replying to the last letter of ‘**M. D. C. M.,” in which he largely quali- fies his ‘‘ shocking statement” with regard to the babies of the present generation, and ‘omplains that I gave a diff-rent meaning to what he said. I qnoted ipsixsima verba his very words, and it is his own fault if he did not say what hemeant. How unfortunate he must have been to have fallen into a practice where for the last twenty years the ‘* vast majority of the mothers” attended by him have been addicted to the use of intoxicants and have kept their babies on a perpetual spree. Perhaps he would also qualify th- statement that ‘ almost the whole” of a glass of brandy or whiskey taken by a mother passes into the system of her nursing child Most people are under the impression that ‘*a'most the whole” of a glass of brandy or whiskey would be instant death to an infant. Che public of the present day is too intelli- geut to accept such loose statements. Analysis of the mothers milk showing that ene the whole” of the spirit taken by her@a¢pre- vent ia the milk would be conclusive proof ; anything less is merely empirical.

Ridiculing the Dead.
Sir,—I notice in that thing called ‘ So- Ci-ty as it is in Charlottetown” (or, as one of our ministers styled it last Sunday even- ing, the blunderbuss) that the author men- tions a piece of music that he says was sung by the choir of (as he calls it) the Disorder- ist Brick Church, the words uf which, * 1 will wash” were repeated four times. Now, I have good reason for knowing (having been a regular aitendant at the Brick Church since the first service held there in 184) that no such piece of music was ever sung there, nor does such a piece exist There is a very beautiful anthem, the words of which are as follows, but are not repeat- ed as above stated : *‘l will wash my hands in innocency. O Lord, and so will I go, &c."’ The last time it was sung there (for it was never sung anywhere else in Char- lottetown) was about tour yerrs ago.
Now, I did not care a fig what the author said about the chotr, er the singing, but quick as a flash it occurred to me and pained ine exceedingly, that two of the sweet voices so poorly described, probably the sweetest ever heard in Charlottetown, are silent in the grave.
So, Mr. Editor. you see he has displayed extreme ignorance in the first; and in the last, in ridiculing the dead. 1U will leave that —it speaks for itself—and is in keeping with the rest of the book. Evidently, ‘Tom Trim” should have not only hands, but mouth, head and all his body washed ip a very strong svlution of something.

Prosecution that is Persecution
Str,—Now that the Seott Act is off your psges, permit mea few lines upon a sub- ject which is widely agitating the public miind,—Lreferto the late prosecution of Dr. George A. Baynes. The question is daily asked, why should a gentleman whose means ensble him to choose his place of residence, and who has relinquished a large practice elsewhere that he might confer lasting benefit upon our Province, be thus persecuted by our so-called ‘*Medical So- ciety’? Persecution generally fails in its intended purpose; and our native talent is not so brilliant as to outshine all foreign asaist- ance. From the testimony arising all round concerving the cures effected by Dr Jaynes, as well as from the late wise decision of our clear-headed and courageous Magistrate, we avgur for our prosecuted —i. e., persecuted —doctor a most successful future.

On the 17th January, passed quietly away at the age of twenty-five, Miss Mary A. Macleod, eldest daughter of Henry Morpeth Macleod, and one of the most highly esteemed and promising young ladies of Dunstaffnage. At the age of sixteen | she passed an exceedingly creditable ex-! amination at Prince of Wales College, and for a number of years after taught schoo! in her native district where her memory , will long be cherished both by those) students whem she fitted for College and by the majority of the young people of the. district now growing into manhood, who re-, ceived the greater portion of their educa- | tion at ber hands.
