Lady Panthers Outlast the Tigers

The UPEI Lady Panthers de- feated their arch—rivals, the Dal- housie Tigers, 67-54 before a large and noisy crowd at Alumni Gym up their recordto 4—Qand chop Dalhousie to its first defeat of the year.

The two teams had met twice previously this year, both times in the final of tournaments. The first game was the final of the Dalhousie Centennial Ball tour- nament and the next, the final of the UPEI-Rodd Tournament.

The way the game started it looked like they might just get that revenge. Dal jumped to the early lead and for much of the first half maintained it. Strong Inside play by Kathy and Trish MacCormack enabled the Tigers ‘o stretch the lead to 9 points, it’s ‘argest margin.

UPEI then started to get its Press to work and the resulting ‘turnovers which led to easy bas- kets helped the Lady Panthers

claw back and tie the games at 34-34. Both teams were unable to get a quality shot in the re- maining final seconds of the half and the score remained tied at 34 at the half.

The first few minutes of the second half proved to be its turn- ing point of the game. The Lady Panthers fast break and full out press turned into a lethal. weapon

lowed her and her teammates into bad passes which invariable were turned into points by the Lady Panthers. :

It was the constant pressure that won the game for UPEI as they were able to force Dal intoa whopping 32 turnover compared with a reasonable 18 for the Lady Panthers.

The bigger Dal Tigers began to look fatiged as the game wound down as the break neck speed at which the Lady Panthers play at finally took its toll.

The game itself was a phys- ical affair as both teams took no prisoners and more than once

the sound of flesh hitting flesh or wood was heard. A case could be made for the Lady Panthers taking the worse of it as Susan Knickle emerged from the game with a bloody nose, blue knees and a throughly exhausted look on her face.

Susan Knickle was top scorer for the Lady Panthers with 16.

most of them coming on drives to the hoop, it was on one of those

drives that she sustained the blow that caused her bloody nose.

Overall. the Lady Panthers speed the scoring around to even up as no other player had more than 12. Stephane Smith, Janet Nichol, and Paula Edwards each had 12 while Stephaine Knikle contributed with a good 10 off its bench.

Tobey Jones continued her great play from the Rodd—UPEI Tournament where she was an all-star. Jones was one of its big reasons for Dal turning its ball over as much as they did as her constant presuring of the Dal guards had a hand in causing many of the 32 Dal turnovers.

Jones also pushed the ball up count when Susan Knickle was taking a much deserved rest and did a fine job of running the UPEI offence in her place. °

The Lady Pan- thers now ranked 6th in Canada embark on the road for a week- end game against the U.N.B. Red Bloomers. The Red Bloomers a very young team and play a sim- iliar style to the Lady Panthers so the game should be good test of the conditioning.

Many of the Lady Panthers and UPEI athletic officals were very happy with the large turnout of fans for the Dal game. Fan support for both the Men’s and Women’s teams is steadily pick- ing up and more and more peo- ple are attending. Alumni Gym is a tough enough place for visiting teams to win, but when it’s full of noisy fans it is damn near im- possible for the opposition. If you haven’t come to a game yet, you really showed, get out and sup- port your own University Teams.

Tournaments

The Panther Lounge presents weekly 8-ball tournaments on Tuesdays for 10 weeks. Weekly prizes will be given out to the top ~ three finishers of the night and they will qualify for the grand prize tournament at the end of the semester. Prizes for this tour- ney will be announced later.

The tournament begins at 7:30 with a free beverage to the first 16 entrants so be there early!

Entry fee is $3.00 and games are singles and single knockout.
