Mr. Hughes was born in the County Armagh, Ireland, 1794. and emigrated to this Island in 1839. He immediately set- tled om a farm at Fort Augustus, where he resided and prospered until his decease. He was a very ardent temperance man, and pre- served the Father Matthew pledge inviolate to the end. Through life he was known as a goed eee Catholic, an obliging aeighber, an industrious farmer, and an honest man. Requiescant in pace.

A Bazaar. — To-morrew and ‘ihursday evening, a bazaar will be held in the Market Hall, in aid of St. Joseph’s Convent. The ladies whe have the affair in hand havejmade mostextensive preparationsfor it. Nothinghas been left undone to assure its success. An elaborate assortment of useful articles will be displayed for sale, and the arrangement for amusements during the evenings will be com plete. We, therefore, advise all who desire to buy handsome Christmas presents, from slippers to smeking caps, from bibs to dresses, not to forget attending to-morrew and Thursday evenings, as good bargains will be given. Jones, a farmer living in the out- skirts of the city, was arrested as the per- son who fired the shot He is an eccentric individual who is well known to the police. To-day, one of the guards who was ac companying the van, and who fired at the aesailant, positively failed to identify Jones, and states that he is notthe man. _ Various rumors are in circulation in the eastern part ef the city regarding attempts which will be made to shoot Quiteau. Colonel Needham, bank examiner, stated to-night that the capital of the suspende? Pacific National Bank is $1,(00,000, with another million for which stockholders will be drawn upon, will suffice to pay all depositors and other creditors. The Central National Bank, which isinyolved in the Pacifics failure to the extent of $800,» 000, has secured sufficient aid to tide over its liabilities, and will continue business on Monday a3 usual, it being stated that they have $250,000 over and above what can be demanded by its creditors aud depositors, Cashier Young, of the latter bank, whese surreptitious transactions with the Presi- dent of the Pacific Bank caused trouble in the Central Bank, has been discharged.
