NICOLET. Que. ICP) - An Bl- year-old woman who 'ought the end of the world had come re- signed herself to death Saturday as the house she ocupied slid down a 70-foot embankment but somehow remained upright in a mass of shifting ground.

Mrs. Pierre Roy was on the top floor of a three-stor house when the landslide that t k the lives of at least three persons began.

”The house started to shake and I could feel it sinking." she said. "I was sure if was the end of the

world ,

"I called in my daughter and my grand-daughter. I knew there was no hope of getting out but I thought if we had to die it would be better to die together.

"The house kept sinking and then it stopped. I looked out and saw it was still upright. The firemen came with ladders and got us out."

Dr. Mnlse Vigneau was treating a patient in his basement office in the same home when the slide began.

”The floor started to crumble and I told the woman to hurry up and get out. We moved up to the next floor but by this time the house was sinking.

”Sudd 'y. it stopped. We were there for about 10 minutes. not dar- ing to move outside, until firemen arrived and took us out."

Acquit Ont. urmer In Murder Case

1 KINGSTON (CP)-An all-male Supreme Court jury Saturday ac- qultled Hilton Campbell. 25-year- nld farmer. of the shooting death of Mrs. Bernice Azulay.

The jury brought in its verdict after 62 minutes deliberation to end the 12-day trial.

Mr. Justice J. L. Wilson made no comment on the decision but merely told Campbell he was free to go.

Charged with the July 21 rifle slaying of Mrs. Azulay. Campbell showed no emotion when the jury announced its decision.

He stood staring straight ahead until his lawyer. Malcolm Robb. went over and talked to him.

The youth's mother and sister- -in-law fought back tears as they walked unhurrledly toward the prisoner's box to greet Campbell. SAID STORIES VARIED

Robb. in his address to the jury. said the crown's case was based on the evidence of a seven-year old neighbor. Frank Harkness. The boy. he contended. had given four different versions on the shooting on four different occas- ions.

Without this evidence. he con- tinued. ihe crown had nothing that would incriminate Campbell.

Mr. Justice Wilson left it up to the Jury to decide the credibility of the boy's testimony. He said if the panel thought the bays story did not stand up. they would have to acquit the accused.

Provincial police said there is a possibility more persons may be buried beneath the tons of earth. Five or six cars. two trucks and a bulldozer were known to have slid into the valley. but police did not know if any were occupied. They said, however, that so far no one has been reported missing.

The mass of sand and clay was still shifting in the basin Sunday and police and civil defence of- ficials delayed atempis to investi- gate for further bodies. Engineers called in to test the safety of neighboring and determine the cause of the slide also were de- layed in their work.

A year-old baby. Gilles Biron, suffered serious head injuries in the slide and was taken to hospital in Montreal. Four or five others were injured slightly.

Survivors told of hearing a growling noise and looking out windows to see pine trees separat- ing and drifting down into the river basin. Although Que river rises to the embankment during the spring. there is no water at this time of year where the houses went down.
