Monday evening meetings were held at Eldon and Uigg, and the Government candi- dates were nominated by large majorities.

The meeting at Point Prim was also nearly unanimous for the late representatives.

The indications are that if Messrs. Mont- omery and Nicholson are opposed they will be elected by a very large majority.

A private correspondent at Pownal writes : “The Opposition is very sickly, and may not live over Nomination Day.”

Fort Augustus.

For want of space, we find it a mechanical impossibility to insert the Secretary's lengthy and able report of the meeting held at Fort Augustus. The meeting was presided over by John Arbuckle, Esq., and it was addressed by H. Beer, J. H. Cummisky, R. Shaw, E. Laverty, R. Reddin, E. K. Coffin, W. E. Clarke and others. The nominations were—

Hon. Francis Keily, proposed by James Trainor, Esq., and seconded by John Me- Quaid, Esq.—Nomination enthusiastically en- dorsed ; Henry Beer, Esq., proposed by Pat’k Mooney and seconded by John Duffy, Esq.— motion lost by an overwhelming majority.

Robert Shaw, Esq., was proposed by James E. Laverty, Esq., Glenfinnan, and seconded ~ 4 Edward Kelly, Esq., of Leke Verd. At Mr. Shaw’s request, the motion was with- drawn. But, the northern portion of the District having since sclec Mr. Shaw, he has acvepted the nomination, and will contest the election with an assurance of success. Mr. James H. Cummisky was also proposed ; but the nomination was lost by a large majority. Messrs. Kelly and Shaw are the nominess of all parts of the District. The ‘‘ cards” of both gentlemen appear in another column.

Tignish. In this District all the candidates profess to be running in the interests of the Government. Messrs. Conroy and Gavin will probably be

elected. They are both true men, in whom the people have confidence.

Hast Point.

We learn that Messrs. John McLean and J. F. Campion are settled upon as the Liberal. Conservative candidates, and that they will be enthusiastically elected.

Murray Harbor. Most encouraging advices come from this district. The canvass for Prowse and Poole is very successful.

The terms, of course, render it impossible for far- mers at a distance to contract.

It is said that the Porte will be advised by the Powers to make concessions to Greece in Thessaly, instead of Janina.

The West Prussian landtags petition against protection, especially as applies to duties on coals, wood, iron and grain.

The Times says the condition of Egypt is owing as much to oppressive taxation as to in- undations ; and good government would re- store the country to prosperity.

The Lincolnshire handicap, to-day, was won by Lord Rosebery’s five-year-old brown horse, ‘**Touchet.”

Hanlan is reported as unfavorably affected by the English climate. He has been confined to his house for four days with a bad cough, and will not be able to row for three or four more days.

x To the Electors of the Second District of King’s County:

GENTLEMEN, -In again solicitng your suffrages, 1t becomes iny duty to state the cir- cumstances under which I appeal to you for re-election.

During the Session recently terminated, a vote of want of confidence in the then Govern- ment was carried in the House of Assembly, which resulted in the resignation of the Ministry. His Honor the Lieutenant Gover- nor was pleased to entrust me with the for- mation of a new Government, which I success- fully accomplished.

Believing that the Electors desired an opportunity to pronounce upon tie conduct of the late Ministry, and wishing to obtain the sense of the country on the present position of affairs, a dissolution of the House of Assembly bas been advised, and an appeal to the Con- stituencies will be made without delay.

At the last General Election public senti ment was expressed in favor of secular education, and the present Ministry will give effect to the voice of the people by maintaining the unsectarian system.

The Government are determined to resort to every legitimate means to lighten the burdens of the tax-payers. In order to accomplish this end it will be necessary to curtail the ex penses of legislation, and believing that one Legislative Chamber is sufficient for this Province, a Bill will be submitted next session, having for its object the abolition of the Legislative Council. The measure will be so framed as to amply protect the interests of property holders. Provision will likewise be made for a reduction of the remuneration to members.

Our civil service is in a very unsatisfactory condition, and the expenditure in regard to it is greatly in excess of the present meaus of the Province. The Government will adopt measures for the reorganization of the entire service, with a view to the amalgamation of some of the departments, a decrease in the number of officials and a general reduction of salaries.

Agriculture has notof late years received such encouragement as the staple industry of the Province demands. In order to stimulate the exertions of our farmers and stock raisers the ‘‘Agricultural and stock Farm” will be placed under improved management, and means will be adopted to render it more gen- erally beneficial than it has hitherto been.

This Province is entitled to a proportioal share of the Fishery Award, and the present Ministry will leave nothing undone that they can accomplish, to obtain the same.

The barbarous system of imprisonment for debt will be abolished, and a more humane law for the protection of creditors will be sub- stituted for it. A measure to secure liens for labor and advances will also be intreduced.

The law relating to roads and bridges re- quires amendment. It and the Registration and Ballot Act shall receive the attention of the Government.

A system of the strictest retrenchment and most rigid economy in the public service will be inaugurated, so as to reduce all the control- lable outlay and keep the expenditure of the Province within its revenue. |

li, after the closest husbanding of the pub- lic resources, the Government find it necessary to continue direct taxation, that system will be adopted, which shall begleast obnoxious to the people. and will entail the smallest expen- diture in the imposition and collection of the amount required.

As I have already exceeded the usual limits of an address, I will not now refer to other subjects that will attract the attention of the Ministry. I wish, however, to assure you that the utmost endeavours of the Govern- ment will be directed to promote such effi- ciency, as well as economy, in the administra- tion of our public affairs, as may redound to the prosperity of the Province and the con- tentment of its people.
