Perhaps the outbreaks in India will help to underline the need for greater urgency in this campaign. It will involve more than one and three-

ing the entire populations of such Asian lands as India, Pakistan and Indonesia, as well as virtually all Africans south of the Sahara and

It also says that Saskatchewan -and Prince Ed- ward Island make little more than an arithmetical check of claims submit- ted by municipalities or contractors. “In these cases,” it-adds,* “there is reason to doubt whether all charges are legitimate and whether the con- ditions of the agreements have been met.”

Many other phases of public ex- penditure are dealt with, many other loopholes of extravagance or misman- agement nated: But, as we said, it’s one-thing to pinpoint governmental waste, quite another to get the action necessary to curb it.

Warning From Britain

A British cabinet minister has added his voice to the appeals to Can- ada to cooperate in _helping the Un- ited Kingdom to reduce its trade def- jcit with this country. Lord Brown, -Minister of State at the Board of — Trade whose chief concern is exports, addressed some pointed remarks on this subject to the Canadian Cham? ber of Commerce in London the oth- er day.

Trade with Canada is re- - sponsible for 28 per cent of the total British trade deficit, and that is something that cannot be allowed to go ‘uncorrected.

It is to be hoped that Finance Minister Sharp and Trade Minister Winters will lose no time in giving attention to this problem, which their predecessors appear to have ignored:
