The conference ’was the re- sult of a student meeting held last May at St. Mary’s Uni- versity in Halifax, where the question of an Atlantic stud- ent organization was discus- sed, because of a feeling that the Canadian Union» of Stud- ents is orientated toward other areas.

OLD S. D. II. STILL EXISTS

SDUSU President Ellen MacDonald, in a recent letter to The Cadre explained that the now-defunct St. Dunstan’s University Student’s Unions is technically an existing organization.

The reason that it still exists is that it is an incorporated body, and must remain so until all the legal commitments, assets, and liabilities, etc), are disposed of. Only then may the charter be dissolved, which, in es~ sance, is another legal step that must be coped with.

The Union President explained that tech- nically she is still the legal head of the union, and“ by law must remain» so until the union is legally dissolved under the laws of the Province. She has asked THE CADRE to publish the following letter to clear up any misconceptions students may have about this problem.

“To the, Students of the University of Prince Edward Island: .

In compliance with the requests of many students, I write this letter in my combined status as a member of the University of Prince Edward Island Student Union and as President of the Saint Dunstan’s Student’s Union Inc. which is, by the way, a legally in- corporated body.

Regretfully, there has been a series of misunderstandings particularly with respect to my decision not to accept any further posi- tion in student government. Initially then, my purpose is to establish (A) That I have never forwarded any resignation and (B) that I was never “shafted” from student politics by anyone. . '

As I stated earlier, I remain as President Of the SDUSU Inc., and will continue in that Office until all my commitments have been fulfilled. I beg that this not be interpreted as an attempt to maintain a tradition. In- stead, it is a legal necessity due to the SDUSU status as a legally incorporated body. Implicit with this status are a number of le-

gal requirements which prolong our dissolu- tion.

First, we cannot surrender our charter until We have disposed of our total assets and liabilities. Needless to say, our biggest asset is the Coffee Shoppe situated on the Malpeque Campus.

Presently we are waiting to receive the equity that we have paid toward the debt on the Coffee Shoppe from St.‘Dunstan’s Uni- versity. The reason that the sum is returned to the SDU Students Union from the Uni- versity is that it was from the latter that the loan was originally taken in 1964.

Having received this sum, which is ex-

'pected to be in the vicinity of $30,000, the

executives of the SDUSU Inc. and the mem- bers of the Coffee Shoppe Board of Gover- nors will have to make a decision regarding its use.

Personally, I would like to see it given to the University of Prince Edward Island Student’s Union as a capital building fund for the new student union building. As soon

as this transaction is completed, the SDUSU'

Inc. will be dissolved and my duties therein fulfilled.

Regarding my “absence” on the “Interim Executive”, I would like to point out that I was never “shafted” or never “ran out” on any particular group of students. Instead, I want to make it quite clear that I was actually offered a position on the Interim Executive, but could not accept because of a recent per- sonal decision to begin a Masters degree next year which necessitates a heavy course load, in this, my senior year, at university.

In addition, I am working part time and I feel that if I were to take on Student Union activities, I would graduate with a poor aca- demic standing, which would limit my chan- ces of being accepted at a graduate school of good standing.

In closing, I hope that each student who has questions regarding the status of the SDUSU will confront me directly. In this manner all misconceptions may be removed. I trust that some of these questions are now answered.”

It is expected that region- al student problems will form the basis of most of the disL cussion, and that solutions may be formulated for some of these problems.

University of Prince Ed- ward Island Registrar M. R. Hennessey will be absent from campus Friday and Sat- urday, Oct. 24 and 25.

He is a delegate of UPEI to the Regional Conference of Atlantic Registrars, w h i ch will be held at Xavier Col- lege, Sydney, Nova Scotia.

At press time, it was not known what would be discus- sed at the conference.

DANCE PROCEEDS FOR FOOTBALL GAME

Hopes are high for obtain- ing enough money for a char- tered bus for either the Dal. or St. F.X. football games.

It is hoped that enough fans from UPEI will be pre- sent to cheer the Island team to victory when it meets St. F.X. in this most-important game of the season.

Accordingly, proceeds for transportation will be raised at a dance to be held at DOWntown Gym, Oct. 24.
