Curious enough, the same idea seems to have suggested itself to a Chinese miod

This is the story:

Two women came before a mandari in China, each of them protesting that she was the mother of a little ¢ hild they had brought with them. They were so eager aud so positive that the mandario wis sorely puzzled. He retired to con- sult with his wife, who was awise and clever woman, whose opinion was hed

An Elephant in Battle.

There is a beautifal story of an old elephant that once engaged in apn Indian Battle. He was standard-bearer, and carried on his huge back the royal ensign,the rallying point of the Poonab host. At the begianing of the fight he lost his master. The mahout, or driver, had just given him the word to halt, when he received a fatal wound and fell to the ground.

The obedient elephant stood - still, while the battle closed around him and the standard he carried. He never stirred a foot, refusing to advance or retire as the conflict became hotter and fiercer, until the Muhrattas, seeing the standard still flying steadily in its place, refused to believe they were beaten, and raliied again avd again around their colors; and all this while, amid the div of battle, the patient animal stood sirainivg its eurs to catch the

sound of that voice it would never bear acair, At length the tide of the conquest
