The thermometer as arranged and with its connec- tions is extremely senistive to variations in temperature, and the instrument is certain to give warning in case of an increase of heat in its vicinity It can be placed with trifling expense in any building in which electrical communication is already established, and its simplicity as well as its value as a safeguard against fire willcommend this improved form of thermostat to all who have occasion for its use.
We congratulate our ingenious young townsman on the preliminary success which has attended the introduction of his inven- tion, and trust that he may be substantial- ly rewarded forthe skill he has displayed in making it. Destructive fires have been and are likely to continue to be numerous and continual in towns and kinds ; and if Mr. Morri-
son's invention should prove the means of

Praise for the Critic’s Captain.
Captain William Genniex writes to the Halfax Herald ; ** About the 15th of Sept. the schooner Union, of Jeddore, Captain Colin Mitchell, was lying at a wharf at Souris, P. E. I., when a large Yankee schouvner approached, under such headway that her captaim could not centrol her move- ments. Rather than run into the duck,this considerate foreigner caused his vessel to run straight into the Union, striking her abvat the fore chains, and causing very serious damage. Captain Mitchell brought the matter to the attention of the custom house authorities, as the Yankee skipper utterly refused to pay him one cent of damages. But for some strange reason they would give him no satisfaction; and in the meantime the offending vess-] was prepar- ing to leave port. The case was finally given into the hands of the captain of the Critic. This gentleman at once took means to prevent the Yankee from sailing until he had made a fair settlement. The captain in question and all those commanding our cruisers are apparently doing all in their power to protect the interests of our fisher- men. But it is the general opinion among those in the best position to know, that if there is to be another season's work like the past one, it would be better to have the sailing vessels replaced by small swift steamers. This summer our cruisers have had to cover too much ground, and in spite of the best that they could de, many of the Yankees took fish inside of the limits. It would also be a good thing to have authori- ties in some Prince Edward Island ports who are a little more loyal to Canadian interests and a little less under theinfluence uf Yankee skippers.

VANCOUVER CITY.
Its Frogress and Prospects.
The approach to Vancouver City is mark- ed by intervales, some of which are dotted by stacks and by coils of hay—-the latter the product of a second crop mown this year. The foliage on both sides of the railway is luxuriant. The leaves have hardly yet (Oct. 17) began to turn from green to gold. It is pleasing to see again the well-known maple, birch and other trees familiar to Eastern eyes—pleasing to see the pretty cottages and gardens, and apple orchards with ripe fruit still hanging from the branches. There can be no question here about the mildness of the climate, or the fer- tility of the soil. But the surrounding mountains cause a doubt as to the amount of land available for cultivation, w):i'
uplands foreshadow a long period of toil for the pioneer husbandman ere he can till his fields Fwith ease and reap their fruits in comfort.
The train arrived at Vancouver punctu- ally **‘ on time.” This is a fact worth noting in view of the long journey from Montreal well nigh three thousand miles ! Vancouver is situated on a rising ground on the western shore of the English Bay, the blue water of which reflects, in its clear depths when it iscalm, every detail of the fine (though still nameless) mountain beyond, with the pretty white cottages of the Indian village at its feet.
The site of the town was, afew years ago, aforest. But first the trees and then theJmonstrovs stumps were cleared away. [ paced around the roots of one of these stumps—seventeen paces! A fire had burnt out the heart of the trunk beside it; and Mr. Warburton, who stands six feet two or three in his boots, could easily pace up and down under its cover with his hat on. Twenty feet from the butt, a section of this tree measured upwards of eight feet infdiameter. While walking about the town we saw the sections of several other trees equally large. ‘The ground on which Van- couver stands was cleared of the roots of many of those monsters of the forest by means of dynamite.
On the 13th of June last year, the entire town, with the exception of one house— some say two houses—was burned down. Between that date and this it has been re- built—for the most part of wood, though there are several substantial buildings of brick and stone.
The largest of these latter is the C. P. R. Hotel—five stories high—now approaching completion. We mounted to the roof of this hotel, and found the view of forest, atream, inlet and mountain—all glistening in the morning sunlight—magnificent.
The most prominent feature of the town itself is the number and variety of its hotels, etc. I counted im its directory the names of twenty-five hotels, nineteen saloons and tive restaurants; and I was told that there are fifty-six places in which spirituous liquor is sold under license—in a year-old town whose population has not yet reached six thousand !
Vancouver is well furnished with side- walks of plank; some of its streets also are paved with plank; and sewers are already being laid to carry off its drainage. The streets are lighted by means of electricity — the incandescent light; but a gas company has been formed in order that the citizens may not be wholly at the mercy of an elec- tric light monopoly; and next year there is to be, in the infant city, a system of water- works.
Vancouver rejoices in two daily news- papers, four churches, a Y. M. C. A., and a public school in which two teachers are employed, besides several labor, National and secret societies, and a City Board.
It is incorporated, as a matter of course. Five wards return ten councillors, and the whole town elects a mayor. One of the Councillors is Mr. George H. Lockerby, lately of Charlottetown. The chief of its police force is Mr. J. M. Stewart, a native of our Province, whose father was a_ well- known resident of Belfast, and who, him- self, stands a most conspicious figure, well
nigh seven feet in height and well nigh three hundred pounds in weight—still,
vigorous aud active.
Chere is not far from Vancouver, on the borders of the Fraser,a comparatively small area of flat land, which (1 was told) is offered at $100 an acre. Wilderness lands can be obtained ad libitum at about $2.50 per acre. But the cost of clearing these lands will necessarily be great, and in view of the millions of acres in the Northwest ready for the plough—-which can be had for almost nothing~-it is not very likely that many agriculturists will be attracted to the vicinity of Vancouver.
There is a good—an immediate—demand for carpenters, bricklayers, plasterers and other mechanics, wages ranging from $2.50 to $5 per day.
Of doctors, lawyers, journalists, store- keepers, hotel-keepers, liquor dealers, ete., there seems to be supply sufficient for some years to come. But producers are wanted in and about Vancouver, as well as in all other parts of Canada that I have visited.
Vancouver lives in the hope that she will one day rival San Francisco. Her ambition is laudable. Let us hope that her hope may be realized.

Colchester has re-afirmed its confidence in the Government by electing Postmaster- General McLelan by 700 to 800 majority. The total vote was, of course, smaller than at the general election, but the Postmaster- General held his majority in almost every district. The town of Truro gave the Minister the splendid majority of 277, or 24 more than at.general election. The Grits, who unblushingly confessed that they ran the election solely to ‘* bleed Mc- Lelan,” are thoroughly disgusted at the ret subs, :
The Sobrapje Opened.
Soria, Oct. 27.
The Sobranje opened to-day. Prince Ferdinand, attended by the civil and mili- tary officers, was driven to the Chamber in State. He was received with acclamations. He said the Government is working for the prosperity and greatness of Bulgaria. Since his accession,order, tranquility and security had been restored. The people are now happily occupied with pacific labors. It had the sympathies of the Sultan and sovereigns of other great powers.
Blunt and Roche Sentenced.
Dustin, Oct. 27. Sir Wilfred Blunt, arrested at Woodford on Sunday for speaking at a proclaimed meeting, was found guilty to-day under the Irish Crimes Act, and sentenced to two months imprisonment.~ Notice was given by defendant’s counsel of appeal. Roche, Poor Law Guardian, also arrested, was
sentenced to three weeks imprisonment.
Railway Fares.

The French Chamber of Commerce have passed a resolution asking the Federal Government to fix rates on the Canadian Railways at two cents per mile, first class, and one cent second class. Also, that fares for palace or sleeping cars be fixed at one dollar each berth for each twelve hours journey.
The Experimental Farm.

It is understood that Mr. Saunders has reported to the Minister of Agriculture in reference tu the location of the proposed experimental farm for the Maritime Pro- vinces, and that the site at Cumberland is recommended as the one best adapted to the purpose.
War Imminent.
Lonpon, Oct. 27.
War is imminent in Zululand against an- nexation to Natal. Sir Arthur Havelock, Governor of Natal, with 1,500 troops draft- ed from the colony, has started for the ter- ritory formerly possessed by Cetewayo, where the latter’s son, Dini Zulu, heads a rising.
The Election Court.

At the election court in Barrington to- day, before Chief Justice McDonald, Thos. Robertson, M. P., admitted bribery by agents, and the Chief Justice declared the seat vacant, ordering Robertson to pay costs... The personal charges were not pressed.

The News this morning saya that unless Salisbury wishes the fisheries negotiations hopelessly doomed from the outset, he must cancel the appuintment of Chamber- lain, and select another commissioner.
The Boundary Railway.

An agreement between Wann & Holt, contractors, and the Local Government for the completion of the boundary railway was ratified to-day, and operations will be commenced at once.
