A MEETING was held at the St. Lawrence Hotel, yesterday. evening, for the purpose of organizing a Base Ball Club. After a few short remarks from the gentlemen present, it was resolved that the same be organized and entitled the ‘‘ St, Lawrence Base Ball Club.” The following officers were elected : W. W. McLeod, Esq., Presi- dent; J. A. Dogherty, Secretary; F. §. Hanford, Dr. Parker and W. A. O, Morson, Provisional Committee.

Unrain’~—The Charlottetown Patriot of Monday publishes a slanderous statement to the effect that the witness, .Cummings, in the McCarthy case had shown great re- luetance to go to Shediac as a witness, and that he escaped from Deputy Sheriff Sweeney at Summerside, and goes on to state that Cummings was at Point du Chene last fall wearing ‘MeCarthy’s rubber coat, which was recognized on him, and that as a conse- quence of this recognition he ‘“‘mysteriously dnarpeated Cummings had been at She- diac and given his evidence several days before the Patriot's slanders were published. ~~Moncton Times.

THERE was quite an excitement at Sum- merside yesterday over a report that was circulated to the effect that a woman, who is now living near Alberton, named Mirs. Parker, who says she is the wife of Annie Parker's brother. She also says that on the night of the 12th Gctober last she was with her husband and Annie Parker. in a house in Shediac, and that Timothy McCarthy came there. He forced his way into the house through a window, and her husband struck McCarthy, killed h:m and fled. She then came to Prince Edward Island. Some Shediac officials are now in search of this woman.

We regret to learn that Capt, James Mc” Lean died very suddenly at Sydney, C. B.» this morning. Capt. McLean was the only son of Mr. John McLean, of this city. He left this port on board his own vessel and was returning when he fell a victim to that terrible disease—diptheria. The vessel returned to Sydney and left him in charge of a physician. Late accounts reported him to be improving, but this morning his father received the sad news of his death. He was but twenty years of age. We ten- der our warmest sympathies to his bereaved parents,
