Unc' Billy Possum is a lot smart. er than many folks think he is. If he were not he would not be alive, Whenever you see any of the Green Forest and Green Meadow tolk growing old, you may know that you are seeing some of the smartest of their kind, for it I) only the smart who live to grow

up. Buster Bear had tried his best to tear open a dead hollow tree inside which he knew Unc' Billy Possum was hiding. He finally had to give up and he shuffled away grumb- ling and whining with disappoint. vncnt. Unc' Billy heard him go.

liel it was to Unc' Billy. But Unc'

Billy was too smart to take a

foolish chance and leave his hiding

place. You see. he couldn't know whether Buster had gone away or was just out of sight, waiting for" him to come out. So Unc' Billy curled up and took a nap right where he was, which when you think of it, was a very sensible thing to do.

Unc' Billy was wakened by a noise at the open end of the old stub of a tree. e one was grunting and talking to himself,

still and listened. In a moment he knew that it wasn't Buster Bear.

What worried Unc' Billy was the (ear that prickly Porky might come way in where he was. He shivered at the thought. You see, like every-l body else in the Green Forest, he was afraid of Prickly Porky's lit- lle spears which are called quills.

Prickly Porky was whining and

romplainlng. He has a way of do- lng that when he has nothing to whine or complain about. Being tione most of the time he probab- ly likes to hear his own voice. Pre- rcntly he began to wonder about this big comfortable hollow. He had never seen-it: before. That was laecausetthe tree hdd'not been on the ground before. Becau it was dead. and so had nothing to offer In the way of food, he had never climbed up to that hollow when the tree waalstanding. NowtPric!;- Iy Porky stopped whining.

”This is good," said he, talking to himself. "This is the bat place in which to sleep I have found for a long time. I think I'll come here often. Iim a bit sleepy. I thin-k I'll take a nap."

So Prickly Porky lay down and made himself comfortable just a little way in from the open end. Then he Vvent to sleep. There was nothing to worry about. Even Unc' Hilly Possum stopped worrying. All he had to do now was to be patient until Prickly Porky woke ' up and left. so Unc' Billytook a nap too.

Presently Buster Bear came back. He wondered if Unc' Billy was still in that hollow. some- how he couldn't give up the thought of a Possum dinner. He" miffed at. the open end. Some one was in there. There was no doubt about that. Of course it was Unc' Billy. Perhaps he had moved up nearer the entrance.
