After reading the poem in the Gem last week writ- ten by K.M. about being “alone amongst the crowd” I wanted to speak to her; to tell her I could sympathize and was there once myself. And you know, I don’t think there is a single human being on this earth who has never felt the pain of lonliness. You are not alone in your feelings.

As I read your poem, K.M., I remembered the feel- ings I had in my freshman year: knowing no one, having to sit alone for lunch when I was so used to being with friends as it was in high school. It hurt and I will never forget that feeling. But things did change. Now I have many close friends but it took a long time because I am a shy person as well although I do enjoy people.

The lonliness you feel will leave someday as you be- gin to make friends. But in order to you must be willing to get involved and say a word or two once in a while. People will not see anything in you if you don’t let them. But don’t forget you are worth something. God does not create junk and He would not die for someone who meant nothing. You are special and there is lots to love in every

single person if only we would. Someday soon a person —

I often see people who are sitting alone in the cafeteria and I wonder if I should sit with them. Unfortunately, it is much easier to sit with those you know. Don’t be harsh with the people who cluster. They are scared of lonliness

To begin with, I fail to understand why Ms. Lund expresses such vehement (not to mention profane) dis- satisfaction with the student body of the university, based solely on the grounds that what she considers to be a sufficient number from the student body failed to attend

And if in fact attendence is any reflection of consensus, perhaps the views I express here and are not restricted to a minority of students but rather reflect a far greater cross-section of opinion.
