Mr. Jonn Rersoups of this Island, was granted a Master's Certificate, after passing a successful examination before the Mar.ne Board of St. John, N. B., an the 16th inst.

Two boats left Cape Traverse, with mails for the other side, at 9 o’clock this forenoon, and succeeded in landing safely, although a severe storm came on and caught them in the passage.

Tue total exports of fish and pickled fish to the 16th inst., from Halifax are: 3,265 tierces, 1,602 drums, 1,067 boxes, 1,227 half boxes dry fish; and 4,948 barrels and 88 half barrels pickled fish.

Remors are afloat in Nova Scotia that a man named Cameron. who died recently at a village near Pictou, came to his death by manslaughter. The case demands investi- gation.

DIPHTHERIA IN WESTMORELAND, N. B.— Mr. W. H. Hayward of Port Elgin, has lost his wife and four children—all boys— since Christmas. Two other children are now ill with it. The disease has also appeared at Point DeBute.

Tue owners of the bark Gunhilda, of Pic- tou, recently wrecked at Bordeaux, received a telegram from the captain an- nouncing thatall the Neva Scotians on board the vessel were saved.

A pispatcH of the 16th from Gloucester, Mass., reports that William Cole, of Prince Edward Island, aged 35, and Philip Hagan, of Liverpool, N. 8., two of the crew of the schooner ‘‘Seth Stockbridge,” were drowned on Grand Banks by the upsetting of a dory.

AccorRDING to copies of invoices received it is evident that the Nova Scotian and New Brunswick smelt shippers will have to curtail their smelt shipments or else they will meet with serious losses. The United States mar- kets are reported to be completely glutted with this fish.

LAWRENCE CLINTON, an inmate of the Poor House, was attacked with a sudden fit of in- sanity while in the Poor House, on Saturday. He set fire to his clothes and flourished them about the apartment, striking terror into the minds of his brother inmates, who thought his object was to burn the house. Sergeant Allan, the Keeper, took him to this city and left him in charge of the police. He will be sent to the Asylum.

Grorack Matong, (colored) and James Blackburn,—two youths of l4and 15 years, respe.tively—appeared at the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court this forenoon, for stealing a basket containing a pair of slippers from the sleigh of Mr. John Cameron, while he was_in the store of Mr. J. D. McLeod, on Saturday evening about 7 o'clock. The larceny was

roved and Malone was sentenced to six and lackburn to four months imprisonment with hard labor.

Rev. Moruer Mary, of the Sacred Heart Convent, Superioress General of the Grey Nuns in the United States and Canada, died at the Convent, Ottawa, on the 16th inst., of inflammation of the brain. The body lay in state and was visited by thousands.

Ottawa, Jan. 19.

It is said that the Pacific Railway sections for which tenders are now being advertised will be let at the earliest possible moment. The delays which have already occurred are said to be owing to the fact that the speci- fications were not ready.

The Governor General will to-morrow adminster the oath of office to Judge Ritchie, the new Chief Justice of the Su- preme Court. Immediately afterwards Judge Taschereau, and possibly Judge Gaynne will be sworn in by the Chief Justice.

The Court will open at noon. The Masque of Welcome which is shortly to be produced in the Opera House in honor of their Excellencies promises to be a grand affair.

The ‘‘Agence Russe” says the preposal to extend the functions of the commission for the organization of Eastern Roumelia, has received the assent of all powers.

Such prolongation does not constitute a violation of the Treaty of Berlin.

The Russian administrator of the Guvern- ment of Eastern Roumelia also is thus pro- longeS until the labors of the organization of the commission are concluded.

Great excitement [prevails over ,the re- ported run on the bank of the London and County Banking Company. The origin of the report is stated to have begun in the dispute about cab fare in front of the bank, which attracted a crowd. It was soon whispered about that the bank was in trouble, and the crowd increased. A genuine runen the bank began, and the street has since been blockaded with people. Corps of policeman are ‘keeping order. There is no unusual excitement inside the bank, though the number of people present is considerably more than usual.

Thomas W. Rooker & Co., Glamorgan- shire, iron masters, have failed. They owe the Bristol and West of England bank £600,000.

In addition to the preposed appointment of several Vicars Apostolic, in parts of America destitute of Episcopal churches, the Vatican intends to establish several new Bishoprics in the United States and institute a hierarchy different from the present one. M. De Giradin proposes a Cabinet from the four sections of the Left, under the Premiership of Gambetta. All factions of the Left held meetings to-day. The moder- ate section, although it unnanimously voted that the ministerial declaration was unac- ceptable, showed during the discussing they almost all favored the retention of the pres- ent Cabinet, if Dufaure will consent to ac- centuate his declarations. The discusssion will be continued to-morrow.

The Republican union declared that they considered it useless to discuss the declara- tion, in view of the unanimous disfavor with which it was received, and instructed M. Flanquet, in Monday’s debate, to es- pecially insist upon a modification in State and charges of public officials.

Post Orrice Clerks Trainor and Haszard had their anticipations of a good night's rest rudely breken by theunexpected arrival at the office of fifty-four bags of mails about midnight on Sunday night. Procuring the assistance of a third Clerk, (Mr. Campbell) they went to work and when the office opened at the usual hour this merning the three sleigh loads of mail matter was ready for delivery, while another portion had been assorted anu was speeding to its destination by the 8 o- elock train.

An ‘interesting event” occurred at St. Dunstan’s Cathedral early this morning, when our genial young friend, Conductor McDonald, of the P. KE. L. Railway, was united in the holy bands of matrimony to Miss Maggie C., third daughter of John A. McKenna, Esq., of this City. The happy couple left on a bridal trip by the western train this forenoon, and we cau safely say that friend Mac. never ex- claimed ‘‘ All aboard!” and felt the force of the expression more obvious than to-day.

Banks McKenzie, who is not un- known in this region, has turned up on the Pacific coast, and is holding temperance meet- ings there. ‘‘Doctor’ McKenzie, the papers call him, for some mysterious reason. Says Dr. D. B. McKenzie: ‘It seems strange to me that, in a country where there are societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals, there is not one for the prevention of cruelty to hu- manity.” Evidently Dr. D. B. McK. doesn’t know much about the institutions in that eountry.
