Scorr Act.—-At the Stipendiary Magis- trate’s Court this forenoon Angus McDonald was fined $50 or one month's imprisonment for a firgt contrayention of the Scott Act ; and $100 or two months’ imprisonment for a second. A third case against the same per- son was dismissed, the one witness examined having purchased hop beer only.

Sap Dearn.—A singular fatality is re- ported from the vyster beds at the mouth of the Seadouc river near Shediac. While searching for oysters, afew days ago, a boy named Oliver Richard dislodged a stick of timber from a bridge, which in “falling struck him and pinned him against another log. He died shortly after being rescued.

This evening the Theological Union lec- ture was delivered in the Methodist Church by Rev. Wm. Harrison, of Charlottetown.

Rev. Mr. Cheppelle, the Secretary of the Union, presided, and the Church was filled.

Rev. Mr. Harrison’s subject was the re- ligious faculty. He spoke of the nature, extent and power of the religious element in general, the principal ideas common to mankind in the religious history of the past, the origin and reliability of those re- ligious ideas, the necessity for some sub- stantial correspondence to the universal re- ligious instincts of the race, the various responses which have been given to the religious beliefs and needs of the race, namely, atheism, science, the new religion of humanity, agnosticism, the paganisms of the world, and Christianity the superna- tural religion.

A Novel Proceeding.

Monrreat, June 26.

An exciting affair occurred at Cote St. Louis to-day. A vote was being taken on the advisability of negotiating a loan of $60,000 to lay a system of water pipes in the municipality. The quarrymen are all opposed to it, and when they learned it was likely they gathered around the poll- ing booths ina solid mass and defied any one to enter. The son of old Villenure tried to enter and was thrown out bya man named Perriault. A warrant was afterwards issued for Perriault’s arrest,

and four officers were sent to put it in execution While arresting him they were mobbed and _ seri-

ously injured. Assistance was telephoned tur and Chief Hughes sent forty men, who succeeded in arresting seven of the ring- leaders. The voting will have to be done over again.

The Address Adopted Unanimously.

Berry, June 26.

Bismarck and many members of the Federal Council were present in the Reich- stag to-day. The President read the address in reply to the speech from the throne. It cordially approves the Em- peror’s declarations, thanks him for his un- selfish devotion to the Commonwealth, ex- presses confidence that under him and the Federal Goyernment’s policy the firmly united German people will not be disturb- ed. The address was adopted unanimously.

Prohibition Resolution Passed.

Hauirax, June 26.

There was a fiery discussion in the Methodist Conference to-day over Pro- hibition and the Third Party question. Re- solutions endorsing the Third Party and condemning the Government for not mak- ing the Scott Act a government measure were voted down by large majorities after a long and bitter discussion. The confer- ence passed a resolution in favor of Prohi- bition almost unanimously, the only persons voting against it being three advocates of the Third Party movement.

The Crimes Act Discussed.

Lonpon, June 26.

In the Commons to-day the debate was resumed on Morley’s motion censuring the Government for its administration of the Irish Crimes Act. Wm. O’Brien (Nation- alist), Right Hon. Henry Champlin (Con- servative), and Mr. Gladstone were the leading debaters. Balfour defended the Crimes Act, and the motion was rejected 366 to 273. The announcement of the re- sult was greeted with prolonged cheers by the Conse. vatives.

Disastrous Floods.

Sr. Louis, June 26.

A despatch from El Paso, Texas, says in- formation has been received there from the flooded district in Mexico, that 1,500 lives were lost and _ 1,000 bodies recovered. The Collector of Customs of Paso del Nort has received an official des- patch stating that 100 miles of the Mexican Railway is impassable and that it will be ten days before the mails can be got through and twenty before freight can be moved.

Tender Accepted.

The city ot Halifax has accepted Allison Smith’s tender for the $50,000 45 per cent. 25 year loan at 1 per cent. premium. This is the lowest rate at which the city ever borrowed money. Halifax banks are only paying 3 per cent. on deposits, and vast sums ure seeking investment.

The Italian was arraigned this afternoon, and pleaded ‘* Not Guilty.” He will be tried on Friday next.

The postponed sale of Flowers and Plants will iin place to-morrow (Thursday), June 28th, at 11 o'clock. In this, the last lot for the season, there are 500 pots, containing a beautiful variety.
