Zine: The Man Who Lived Inside His Camera Author: Caleb Latreille

This is a fun little zine that consists of a short story about a pho- tographer who decides to move into his camera. Romance ensues. Curious? You’d better be. The story itself is great, but what really won me over was the production. Really nice (for still being photocopied, mind you) with lots of extras that forced me to fall in love with this zine and both the people involved in its cre- ation. Hooray for people.

Album: turntable scientifics Artist: Mr. Dibbs Label: Cease and Desist

Let the founder of 1200 Hobos and turntable freak Mr. Dibbs scratch your vinyl itch with this cut and paste masterpiece. Splicing everything from obscure funk to Nirvana to Scooby Doo samples, Dibbs makes a good case for giving record players to A.D.D. sufferers. Speed and an enor- mous collection of grooves and breaks are Dibbs’ weapons of choice in this shredded scrapbook of hip

hop, rock, and pop culture. Originally released as a mix tape in 1995, this underground exploration of samples is as fresh and mind blowing now as at was Six years ago.

Album: Expansion Team Artist: Dilated Peoples Label: Capital/EMI

Dilated strikes back with more divine science and triple optics. The Peoples are quite possibly the most underrated group in hip-hop and one of the best. Expansion Team is a stellar album surpassing their debut the Platform, which is something unheard of for a sophomore hip-hop album. The major difference on this album is the production for which they enlist some of the biggest names in the game right now (Alchemist, Juju, Premier and Da Beatminerz). Evidence and Iriscience provide col- orful and meaningful rhymes with metaphors that often take many lis- tens before you get them, and are sec- ond only to those of Gza. What makes the Dilated Peoples so good is

that they mix socially conscious mes-

sages and scientific theories with the sound and feel of old skool hip-hop. On almost every song there are sam- ples and Dj Babu cuts. Instead of stu- pid skits there are interludes with some of their fam delivering short raps, a DJ track and a Harry Allen song intro, which along with all the ill references in rhyme, show the influence Public Enemy has had on this west coast group.
