He contends that one of the choicest pleasures 9r matrimony is the daily spat, and that for a married couple to get along together without ever having a disagreement does not show that they arc ideally happy, as is gener- ally supposed.‘ . It merely proves that they lack interest in each other, or that one has been com- pletely subjugated by the other, or that their dif- ferences are so vast that they have given up trying to compose them and just call it a day and let things ride.

'I‘o a. certain extent, one is bound to agree with this point of view, for it is obvious to the most ' casual observer. that belligerent husbands and x wives fight simply for the love of a shindig. Per- ' . ' ' SOllillly, I have assisted, as the French say, at hundreds of bloody battles between husbands and wives and I have never eccn one that could not have been prevented by the use of the slightest tact and forbearance 0n the part of either of the combatants or that could not have been called off at any part of the fray.

Also, it is observable that expressions that are perfectly innocuous when used by outsiders are the fighting words when uttered by husbands and wives to each other, and that husbands and gives go to the mat over and wives to each other, and that husbands and wives go to the mat over of resenting in a stranger.

All of this lends to the inevitable conclusion that married couples quarrel bflfililse ilicy enjoy it. It infuses pep into the monotony of dom- rsiici‘ v. l: slirs thl- stagnant blood mid makes it leap Through the veins with cxrili-inciit. 1t gives them a change to blow off their resentment , instlifc in gcnerzil and blame each other for all their own failures. It gives them a chance to say to each other all the mean things they would like to say to other people, but dare not. ‘It is their great emotional safety value.

Otherwise they would not quarrel. They would deal diplomatically with each oihei-‘s liitlf‘ peculiarities instead of going at them hammer and tongs. They would carefully avoid the topics that they knew were as good for an argument as a nickel is for a package of chewing gum instead nf going out of their way tn drag them by the heads or the tails. And when either pciceived that the others feelings were a little ruffled he or she would return the soft answer that turns away wrath and smooths down the fur.

The fact that husbands and wives fight because they like to fight is still further proved by their getting along amicably with everybody else but each other. Mr. A. never has a. run-in with his boss or the men with whom he works. Instead. he is so good-natured and easy-going that they almost burst into the chorus of "For he’s a jolly good fellow" whenever lie appears on the scene. Mrs. A. is celebrated for her sweet and amiable disposition among all her friends and is put on difficult committees in her clubs because of her ability to handle cantankerous people with gloves. It is only when Mr. and Mrs. A. meet in the family circle that they put on their fighting clothes and mix it. with no holds barred.

Now for be it from ine to interfere with the favorite indoor sport of no many married people, but however enjoyable it may be, I am con- vinced that quarreling is the most dangerous pastime in which husbands and wives can indulge. Of course, they deny this and say that they al- ways kiss and make up, and that each knows that the other didn't really mean the tiliilris that he or she said, and that they are forgiven and for- gotten.

But, uiiforllliieltcly, this is not true. If the smaller flowered dahlias are chosen, they will make excellent cut blooms. Any soil that will grow corn will grow good dahiias, but drainage is of great importance. Dahlia plants will not flourish where the ground is wet or heavy. Clay soil, however, can be light- cued by using loose. coarse man- ure or leaf mould. Sometimes the soil is too sandy, but that condi- tion can be overcome by adding well rotted manure. Most dahlias make large growth, and for that reason should stand eighteen in- ch05 apart, with twice that distance‘ between the rows. Six inches is about the right depth for planting the average dahlia root.

Any unmiecessary ef- fort on the part of the bees is a loss to the beekeeper. Ari adequate supply of pure ivater, easily acces- sible to the bees, is as essential as food and protection at this time of the year. An article appearing in a recent bee journal quotes two experiments showing that in one case 20 colonies of bees took up 132 pounds of water during a. period of] 4 weeks, while another group of 12‘ colonies took up 112.6 pounds. This does not take into account the’ amount obtained from sources other than those measured.

CREAM OF SPINACH SOUP

2 small onions, sliced

3 tablespoons butter

2 cups meat stock (veal, beef or chicken.)

2-3 cup dry bread crumbs

Pepper

1 teaspoon salt

11.1,- tablespoons flour

3 tablespoons cold water

2 cups cooked sifted spinach

2 cups inilk

‘.5 cup cream

Cook the onions slowly in butter until soft and yellow. Add the meat stock, bread crumbs. salt, pepper, and simmer twenty minutes.

' Mix flour with the cold water to a smooth past-e and stir slowly into the soup. Cook ten minutes, then add the spinach, milk and the cream.

Reheat and serve at once, Yield: Five cum
