stances has been cut in two. On the other hand,- therc has been a great increase in prices of horse drawn vehicles. such as wagons, sleighs and even buggies. ln still other cases, such as stand- ard tillage and harvesting machines, prices have risen moderately compared with the 1926-29 period. It is. of course, with respect to articles or commodities which farmers still use in sub- stantial amounts tliat there is the greatest coin- plaint against rising prices. In recent years fer- tilizers and uiillfeeds, as well as primary grains, have become increasingly important on the list of commodities which farmers buy, especially in Eastern Canadu The Board concedes the coili- plex nature of the problem, and the necessity of dealing with every phase on its merits.

In general, the Board recognizes that the maintenance of price alone, without regard to the effect of the price on supply, is not sound ad- ministration. This applies especially to food prices. Fresh fruits and vegetables have been temporarily withdrawn from the price ceiling order mainly to avoid stoppages or serious short- ages of supplies It was recognized that many of these products had been sold at. relatively low ceiling prices during the base. period.

Some farm prices Iiave been withdrawn from the ceiling insofar as the primary product is con- cerned, but have been kept under the ceiling in the processed or manufactured state. These pro- ducts are mainly livestock, poultry and eggs, milk and honey. In the case of livestock for instance, there is no ceiling price on the live animal which the farmer may sell to the dealer or the abattoir, but there is a ceiling price on the meat, hide and other tiroducts sold by the abattoir. The pur- pose of this arrangement is to permit trading to take place freely between the farmers and those whom or through whom they usually tell their products, but to maintain ceiling prices on the goods as they reach the ciiiistuucr.

The mould which produces citrinin is of very common occurrence and new strains may be readily isolated from natural sources. Very
