At the meeting of Presbytery, held on

Tuesday in St. James’ Hall, a good deal of business was transacted.

Measrs. J. M. Fisher and A.S. Stewart were appointed a committee to examine the session records of Mount Stewart.

The clerk was instructed to give the usual certificates to Messrs. Foster and Douglas, students laboring within the bounds.

The Presbytery agreed to arrange for supply to Dundas congregation for four Sundays. The Presbytery recommended that the General Assembly’s plan of work be adopted by ell the young people s rezie- ties.

The Presbytery then heard ex gratia Mevsrs. Nicholson and Mathiesoa in re ceriain alleged grievances, and afier due consideration the entire matter was dropped. On motion the session records of Mount Stewart were attested by the Moderator.

A resolution was adopted by the Presby- tery expressing cordial appreciation of the self-denying generosity of Rev. W. L. Mc- Rae in giving up five weeks of his well- earned furlough to addressing meetings in the respective congregations within its bounds, and its ,rateful recognition of the larger knowledge of and increased enthu- siasm in missionary work which have come to these congregations as the result of his labors.

The Presbytery also passed a resolution sympathising with Rev. Jobn Gillis in the affi ction which had overtaken his family.

Some days ago it was reported that Li Hung Chang, after his return to his native country, had been appointed minister for foreign aflairs. It now appears that the emperor of China, instead of appointing Li Hung Chang to any new office, has docked bim a year’s salary of those oftices which he now holds. This is a plan of rewgrding his services which the great Oriental statesman will hardiy appreciate.

The Princess of Wales has founded in Norfock a technical school for dressmak- ing and cookery.

The Queen has sent a message to the Viceroy of India expressing her sympathy with the people who are suffering with the famine caused by the failure of the sum- mer rains, and promising to assist them.

When the late Archbishop Benson was a student at King Edward’s school, Bir- mingham, he carried off five prizes in, one year, namely, those for English verse and Eoglish prose, Latin verse and Latin prose and Greek verse. This wasa feat that had never been previously accomplished, n‘teven by Bishop Lightfoot, who, asa boy. was one of the greatest prize-winners of his day.

And now Spain is troubled by the spread to the Sooloo Islands of the rebellion that began in the Phillippins. It is true that the Sooloos are not of much importance, containing 75,000 people, or thereabouts. But every little counts when the burden is already heavy. There are not enough Spanish soldiers in the Philippines to deal with the rebellion there, and the 250,000 in Cuba are inadequate. Spain bad better throw up the sponge, and turn to home reforms,
