Scales, three 1olarships are now available for second-year dents at UPEI under the following terms: ese scholarships are open to rural students m Prince Edward Island. One will be given ch year to a student from each of the three unties of the Province.

North Nova Scotia Highlanders Memory ub Bursary

The North Nova Scotia Highlanders was med in June, 1940, from the four units of 18 ghland Brigade N.P.A.M. These were the ‘tou Highlanders, the North Scotia Highland- .(M.G.), the Cape Breton Highlanders and : Prince Edward Island Highlanders. The tto of the unit is “Cos cheum nach gabh eadh” -- “No retreating footsteps”.

On July 31, 1941 the battalion arrived in onport, England, During the following three ars the unit participated in exercises as part the Allied effort in World War II. On June 1944 the unit landed in Normandy, carrying t an important role in the D-Day invasion d continued to serve until the war ended on ay 8, 1945.

The veterans of the North Nova Scotia ghlanders Memory Club support three rsaries in the Atlantic Region. One Bursary available for students of the University of ince Edward Island and is administered ough the University.

This bursary will be awarded on the nual basis to a full-time student at the liversity of Prince Edward Island on the basis demonstrated financial need. Applications - available at the Registrar’s Office. The plication deadline is October 15.

The annual $500 bursary entitled the “Margaret (Mullen) Griffin Bursary” is to be awarded to any Island single parent (male or female) who is a full-time student taking at least three courses per semester in the School of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward Island.

It shall be awarded by application to the Scholarship and Awards Committee on the basis of financial need after the first year of study. Applicants must have maintained an average of 65% in the nursing courses in the first year of study.

Note: For the purposes of this bursary, Island residency is defined as having spent a significant portion of one’s life in this prov- ince. Application forms are available at the Registrar’s Office or at the School of Nursing. Deadline for applications is mid-October.

The Elsie Cuthbertson Memorial Music Bursary shall be awarded each year to a full-

. time student enroled in the Music Program at

the University of Prince Edward Island, and who has a demonstrated financial need.

Preference will be given to: 1. Students of voice 2. Canadian Citizens. Application forms are available at the Registrar’s Office or at the Department of Music. The deadline for applications is Friday, 13 October 1995.

PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Engineering Bursary for Women

This bursary is for women studying engineering at UPEI , in recognition and support of women pursuing non-traditional fields. It will be awarded to a women entering third year. The bursary will be awarded to a student who maintains a passing average arid demonstrated financial need.

This bursary was established in 1995 by the government of PEI on the twentieth anniversary of the PEI Advisory Council’s work to encourage young women to choose careers in Math and Science fields. The bursary also pays tribute to the fourteen women engineering student who were murdered at L’Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. Application forms are available at the Registrar’s Office. The application deadline is Friday 13, October 1995.

The UPEI Alumni Association offers the three scholarships (Donna and Peter Meincke Alumni Scholarship, Earl F. Nicholson Alumni Scholarship, Bill Ledwell Alumni Scholarship) valued at $1,000 each for 1995-96. Following are the terms:

1. Applicants must be full-time students in their fourth year at UPEI carrying at least a normal load of five courses per semester and scheduled to graduate in May 1996.

2. The awards will be based on aca- demic performance and financial need.

3. The awards will be for one year only.

4. Applications must be received at the Registrar’s Office no later than noon on Friday, 13 October 1995 and are available at the Registrar’s Office.

The Coles Associates Ltd. Scholarship, valued at $500, is to be awarded to a high school graduate from Prince or Kings County who is enroled in first year of Science or Engineering program at the University of Prince Edward Island.

It shall be awarded by application to th Scholarship and Awards Committee on the basis of financial need. Application forms are available at the Registrar’s Office. The deadline for application is Friday, 13 October 1995.

When | walked into Robertson Library this year | was shocked. There on the floor was ugly carpetin weird shapes. Why? Inthe rest ofthe world, schools, hospitals and public buildings of all sorts have been viciously ripping up carpets. They have been diag- nosed as the cause of many evils. Now thatthe library's air will be totally smoke free, why do they wantto fill it with more chemical pollutants and allergens? | am sensitive to such things and | fear entering the library. | hope they enjoy the carpet. | am afraid -- very

Dear Editor,

Ithas recently come to my attention that some individuals hold more than one job oncampus. In my opinion it seems unfair that students can hold two or more different studentpositions on campus, ie. lab assistants. Is there a personnel hiring policy regarding students holding more than one job on campus? Ifnot, maybe there should be. It would seem thatsome qualified students are being denied positions because another student has

been awarded two jobs.

Why should students hold more than one position on campus? Aren't we all in need ofmoney? Perhaps itcould be argued that UPEI hasa shortage of qualified students for these jobs, butin reality itwould seem that the campus has plenty of qualified students.

Thereis also aconcern regarding departmental procedure on hiring. Adepartment should not hire on the basis of whoever happened to get their name into the chair of the departmentfirst. This has been known to happen inthe past.
