Tue readings of the Rev. Mr. Carruthers in St. James’ Hall, last evening, were well re- ceived by an appreciative but somewhat small audience. It was made very evident that the Kev. gentleman is a reader of a high order. For nearly two hours he entertained his hear- ers with his ‘‘selections from Scotch authors” to their hearts’ eontent. We understand that Mr. Carruthers will deliver a lecture on Thursday evening—Subject : ‘‘Scottish Lite and Character ;’ and we would suggest to the committee the propriety of securimg a larger

and more centrally situated hall. — - —_———

Bones or 4 Mastopon.—In the month of June last some laborers, while digging a ditch on the farm of Mr. George Cromwell, at East Oxford, Ontario, found the remains ef ananimal. These bones were examined by Prof. Haight and his assistant, of the University of Toronto, whe had gone to the place where they were found, about five miles from Weodstock. These remains ap-

red to be part of a mastodon’s skeleton. The jaw, which is complete, is two feet four inches long and the teeth weigh four pounds. The intention is to search for the

remaining bones.

Ross anp Hanuan.—A press despatch of the 25th from Portland, Me., says ;—** It is probable that the Ross-Hanlan sculling match will be postpened until next June, as a gentleman from this city offers # $5,000 purse provided this is dene and he is allowed to name the course.” Despatches from Toronto report that Hanlan is net very favorable now towards St. Louis. He is digusted, however, at Ross’ delay in naming the place for the race.’ Hoss, it is understood, favors Lake Maranaceok, Me., or Washington. The place will certainly have to be agreed upon at once as Nev. 15th has been selected as the time.

Feanret Accipest.— The Fredericton Capital of Tuesday says: “‘ Yesterday at Gibson, alittle boy about four years old, son of Beverly Jouett, was, it is feared, fatally injured bya horse kickiug him. It seems that a young horse was running loose around

he field in the vicinity of the barn where the ittle fellow was playing. The horge comin quite near him, the boy picked up a smal stick and struck the animal on the hind leg. In an instant the horse wheeled and strack him a terrible blow fair in the face. From the
