Thank God, that on a thousand hills His summer gift the landscape fills; And reapers in the joyous morn Are busy with the ripened corn.

American Stock Market.

The recent upward movement on the Stock Hixchange, says Henry Clewes, proved irresistible. Nothing equaling it either in force or character has been seen in years, Based on the soundest of all foundations, the profuse generosity of na- ture and a healthy national prosperity, it! is evidefttly impossible to seriously check the spirit of buoyancy thus imparted. In the course of time it will undeubtedly run to excess; it will also be accompanied by fluctuations of varying severity; it may be that in some instances the advance is al- ready beyond reason; but the one great fact remains, that of all nations on the} earth we are-this year most wonderfully | favored in respect to the products of the | soil. - With assured pleniy at home and scarcity abroad, the farming classes of the Uuited States have before them a period of | pro: perity to which they have long been | stramers. Not only the railroads and business interests generally will benefit directly from large and paying crops; but | in another respect, so far not fully appreci- | ated, will they receive acyantage. The iarmers of the Northwest have for years been overridden with debt; and the discon- tent thus promoted has been at the bottom | of the injurious currency and anti-railroad | agitations. If the estimate that our wheat, corn, oat &nd cétton crops will preve worth 2,000 millions of dollars, and there is no reason to doubt these figures, it is safe to assert that hundreds of millions of farm mortgages will be paid off, in part or full. | Lenders have had such unpleasant experiences | with this sort of security that they will be glad to regain their money; and borrowers will be equally eager to escape the! heavy interest charges which swamped hard- | earned savings. i

Contentment will succeed

discontent amongst the farmers, and we shall

hear less of the crazy currency and silver

agitations which have held capital in fear and

trembling the last few years. For the

Farmers’ Alliance there will be no further use

whatever; and we may also hope for more

decent treatment of railroad interests from_ the various State Legislatures. On the other hand, the capital released from farm mortgages

must find investment somewhere; and this, as

already said, is a point often overlooked in

estimating the future demand for stocks, ' Such influences as these are at the bottom of

the present movement, and account for the

stubborness with whieh the public are holding

fast to stocks.

Marriage and Divorce.

IN TWENTY YEARS 328,716 DIVORCES WERE GRANTED IN THE UNITED STATES.

‘ Marriage and Divorce” was the sub-' ‘ect of an interesting paper read before the | niterian Gonference at Saratoga, N. Y.,| on 26th ult., by Hon. Carroll D. Wright,

of Washington. After reviewing the mar-

riage statistics in the various states 1n the

union, Mr. Wright said: ‘‘ From 1867 to, 1886, inclusive, there were granted in we} United States 328,716 decrees of divorce,

the increase being steady and rapid yearly, showing an increase of 157 per cen’. in the | 20 years, in which the population increased ! only 60 per cent. Of the 328,716 divorces | granted in the 20 years specified, 216,176

were granted on the petitjon of the wives. | The duration of the married time is also an interesting study. : ical ‘- In the period named it averaged 8.07!
