A Very Foxy Fox.

A gentleman whose word cannot be doubted and who its not easily deceived tells the following:

Very early one morning he saw a fox

ducks feeding in the rushy end of a highland lake. After awhile the fox, going to windward of the ducks, put afloat in the fake several! bunches of dead rushes or grass, which floated down among the ducks without caus- ing the least alarm.

It spans the creek at a height of about 200 feet, and the walls of the canyon rise above it on either side 700 or 800 feet and on one side form a perpendic- ular precipice. The bridge is of lime formation, and the inside of the great arch, which is some 250 feet across, is worn by the water as smooth as though chiseled by the skillful band of a stonemason. The arch on top is nearly, if not quite, 400 feet in width, 1,000 feet in length across the canyon and at the thinnest part only six feet through. About the center of the arch is a hole large enough to admit the body of a man and through which one can look down into the crystal pool of water 200 feet below.—Globe (A. T.) Silver Belt.

Fright, Not Fascination.

Naturalists are not at all agreed upon the point as to whether snakes are able to fascinate their prey. Certainly they do not possess the power to the extent that popular belief would have it. Stories of the weird and mystic influ- ence of a serpent’s eye fall flat in the face of scientific accuracy. What can be said of snakes, however, is that their very appearance paralyzes the vietim. It cannot move for fright, for its faculties are temporarily suspend- ed. There {is no fascination about this, however. Itis fright, and fright alone.
