The Pictou Standard says that every coal mine in Pictou County is now raising all the coal possible, and every miner has all the em-

And, this the Standard claims, is due to the change of tariff. The Halifax Chronicle on the other hand says that the coal trade of Nova Scotia has been injured by the new policy.

Ir is said that the true version of the George Washington ‘‘hatchet” story has late- ly come to light, in the confession of a colored woman, who recently died at the reputed age of 125 years, who claimed a peer with the nurse of said George. It was really the old woman who did the cutting, but George had so strong a love for his ‘‘mammy’”’ that, with boyish frankness, he honorably did ‘‘misrepresent,” and privately received the the punishment himself, which was faith fully administered by the irate but loving father.

portation of gold from the beginning of August | to the 12th September amounts to 19,650,763, and silver $529,424, making the aggregate of the two metals $20,290,187. The banks have already gaine| enough of this to effect the withdrawals of money into the Treasury in connection with settlement for the Syndicate subscriptions for four per cents ; and yet the banks have, since the middle of August, lost $18,400,000 of cash. The inference is not far from $2,000,000 of currency have been called from this city to the interior within the last six weeks.

Yeu.tow Frver.—On Thursday morning tbe brig “Woodcock” arrived at Halifax from Porto Rico after a voyage of twenty days, having left San Juan on the 28th August. The captain reports that three of the hands died of yellow fever. Otto Fisher, 21 pe of age, a native of Settin, Prussia, was the first victim. He died while the vessel was lying at San Juan, P. k. The other two died at Humacaco, P. R. Their names are Robert Wake and Peter Gallant, the former a native of Sunderland, E d, aged 22 years; the other is a native of P. E. Island, aged 25. The rest of the ship's company escaped the disease entirely. The captain reports that on the 8th inst., in lat. 29 42 N., long. 63 08 W., passed the schooner “Lizzie Tupper,” steering S.
