VOLT.“th ATTEBTING 'rris room or Lose xxii. 44.—The awful and affecting event mentioned by St. Luke xxii.44 --“ His sweat was as great drops of blood falling down to the ground" —has been the subject of many skeptical objections, to which is stop- ly sufficient to reply; first, that even ifsuch a circumstance were possible, the particle, translated “ as it were,” perfectly admits ofa figurative mean- ing; but secondly, that such a cir- cumstance, far from being impossi- ble, has actually taken place in other instances or at least circum- stances so analogous to it, as to ren- der the account in question fully credible, even if it had not the sanc- tion of holy urit to support it. By consulting Poole and other commen- tators, the reader will find several examples in illustration of the sacred text, to which others might be added from modern medical publications; but it is not, I believe, generally known, that Voltaire himself has our- rated and attested a fact which ought forever to stop the mouths ofinfidels of minor magnitude. Speaking of Charles IX, of France, in his Uni- versal History, he says—“ He died in his thirty-fifth year ; his disorder was of a very remarkable kind : the blood oozed out of all his pores. 'l‘his malady, of which there have been other instances, was owing to either excessive fear, or violent agitation,or to a feverish and melancholy tempera- ment.” It was not an unimportant corroboration of the truth of the sa- cred Scriptures, that they relate with perfect simplicity, and without note or earplanation, circumstances, which at the time they were recorded, must have appeared to most readers abso- lutely incredible, but which have been subsequently illustrated and proved by the researches of Christi- ans, and even by the incidental admis- sion of infidels themselves.
