Notes and Comments.

—The centennial of the arrival of Bishop McEachern upon the shores of Prince Edward Island was celebrated yes- terday by His Lordship Bishop Melntyre, the clergy of the diocese, and hundreds of men and women,the descendants of those to whom'the revered pioneer Priest and Bishop ministered. It is well to cherish the memories of good men who have gone be- fore.

Mark Wright & Co., of this city, shipped yesterday a schooner load of furniture to Chatham, New Brunswick, for distribution along the line of railway, and they have taken a laage number of orders from Nova- Scotia and New Brunswick. It gives us great pleasure to note the enterprise of this company. They show that factories here may compete successfully with those of the other Provinces, and ‘‘carry the war into Egypt.”

—It will please at least one of our cor- respondents to learn that the “ original package" bill, as passed by the Senate and accepted by the President, renders operative the police powers of the state over liquors as articles of barter and sale, ‘‘to the same extent and in the same manner as though such liquors or liquids had been produced in such state or territory,” and makes no excemption therefrom ‘*by reason of being introduced therein in original packages or otherwise.”

—Under the provisions of the national bankruptcy bill which has passed the house of representatives in the l nited States, any person may become & voluntary bank- rupt who owes debts to the amount of $500. This, however, does not apply to national banks or municipal corporations. The same amount is the minimun for involuntary bankruptcy, and the additional exceptions are farmers, charitable or religious societies and wage workers. November Ist, next, is the time for it to go into operation.

—The Temiscamingue Colonization rail- way has been formally transferred to a cor- poration composed of directors and officers of the Canada Pacific company. The work of building the railway along the north shore of the Ottawa river from a point op- posite Mattawa to Fort Temiscamingue will be pushed forward as rapidly as possible. Some sections of the road will be very difti- ault to construct. The Canadian Pacific company will build « bridge over the Otta- wa at Mattawa to connect the Temiscam- ingue road with their main line.

—The St. John,SN, B., Evening Gazette recently published an excellent portrait of the Hon. John Costigan, Minister of In- land Revenue, accompanied by a sketch in which a well deserved tribute of praise is paid tothe Minister. Infconeluding , the writer says :

‘There is no more popular or accessible member in the Cabinet at Ottawa. Even when he is busiest he never denies admission tv the humblest of those who wish to see him. His uniform kindness to all is the subject of re- mark amougemployees of the Government,and gives him many missions to perform that do not often fall to the lot of Cabinet Ministers.”

—It is reported that Emperor William has received a mysterious warning to be careful on his visit to Russia and to avoid as much as possible too close contact with the Czar. The unknown writer of the warning says that the Emperor has begun his reign in a satisfactory manner, and that there is a purpose to give him a fair chance to prove himself a man of the people, but the Czar has condemned him- self by his own acts. Queen Victoria is represented to be much alarmed about the matter, and to view her grandson’s proposed visit to Russia with many misgivings which, however, the Emperor doves not share,

—The Canadian Live-Stock Journal is authority fer the following rather startling statement concerning the relative value of ground oats and cut hay and whole oats and uncut hay: ‘The London Gmnibus Com- pany found that 3,000 horses fed on sixteen pounds of ground oats, seven and one-half pounds of cut hay, and one-half pound of cut straw did as much work and kept in as good condition as another 3,000 fed on nine- teen pounds of whole,cats and thirteen pounds of uncut hay ; thus saving by grind- ing the grain and cutting the feed six pounds of feed per day, or a saving in the feeding of 6,000 horses amounting to $300 per day.”

— The Calgary Herald is greatly exer- cised over the rumor that ‘‘the gentlemen of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway ” are about to acquire, or have acquired a large block of land on the Elbow River, opposite Calgary, and intend laying it out in town lots as arival to Calgary. ‘The Herald claims that it would be a breach of faith on the part of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and the Government if after having sold the town site of Calgary, and attracted a large amount of foreign capital to the place, the starting of a new town was permitted.

—In the Northfield Independent, —a paper published in Northfield, Minnesota, of date August 6th, we find the following :—-

‘*‘Louis Johnston, who has been at Winni- peg attending a convention of locomotive engineers, says that that city is recoverin from the effects of the bursted boom of severa years ago, and that it shows every sign of renewed prosperity. He speaks enthusiastic- ally of the wheat crop in the Province of Manitoba. He never saw such a crop coming out of the ground. A person can travel for hours along the Canada Pacific and see nothing but one unbroken field of splendid wheat. As soon as you come further south into Dakota and Minnesota you see a difference for the worse. The crop nowhere looks so well as on the other side of the line.”

About five hundred persons in lowa have decided to form a “‘Bellamy Colony” and settle in Louisiana. The ‘basic principles” of the enterprize recognize the perfect equality of membership. Each is to re- ceive the full product of his labor except an amount sufficient to discharge the indi- vidual debt to society. Each stockholder pays $500 into the common fund, which reverts to himself if he resigns or is ex- = from the colony, or to his heirs if

Gathering of the Clans.

AT CHARLOTTETOWN.

This was a glorious day for tho time- honored Gathering of the Clans. A large concourse of people from all parts of the country came into town. Shortly after ten o'clock the Caledonian Club of the Prov- ince, headed by band and pipers, marehed in procession to the driving park at Ken- sington, where the usual tests of strength and skill, speed and dexterity, were made with great spirit, amid the applause of the spectators. The gathering of the Clans at Dundas took place, according te announcement, on the 6th inst. The day being tine, a large concourse of people assembled from almost every section of the Island. Though the number of competitors was small, the con- test in all the games was spirited and creat- ed much interest among the spectators. The following is a list of the athletes who won prizes :—

Hon. G. E. Foster, the Minister of Finance, and Mrs. Foster, arrived at Charlottetown this morning. They left this afternoon in the Steamer Stanley.

The Pairiot says. We are sorry to learn that Wille, second son of W. D. Stewart, Esq., formerly of this Island, but now of Boston, Mass., accidently fell down an eleva- tor well at Boston on the 6th inst., and was instantly killed.

Our informant of yesterday states that Mr. W. B. Morrison, who filled with much ac- ceptance for several years the position of City Clerk in this city, now holds an excellent position in the general office of the great Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway in Chicago. In the office of the Chicago, North Western and Omaha Railway is a son of J. Morton Lydiard, Esq., well known in [this

rovince, and grandson of E, L. Lydiard,

., late of this city. Itis the intention of young Mr. Lydiard to visit his many relatives and friends in this province during the present summer. In the same city, Mr. Robert Muir- head of Summerside, holds a good position in the office of the freight department of the Baltimore and Ohio Railway. In St. Paul, Mr. D. D. Davies, formerly of the P. E. I. Railway, holds the position of auditor of pas- senger receipts in the Great Northwestern Railway. Mr. Davies has been wonderfully successful, and is popular with provincials in the West. Mr. J. Hammond Whear is a book-keeper in the immense wholesale estab- lishment of J. A. Shea & Co., Bridge Square, Minneapolis. ‘‘Ham” takes great pleasure in giving you an idea of the quantities of fruit isposed of by their house. The oranges, bananas, etc., come and go by the train load. Barnard Bros. & Cope do a large furniture business here, and supply a large portion of the West The Barnard Bros. are sons of Thomas G Barnard, Esq., a native of this city He has retired from the business, but his three sons, with Mr. Cope as associate partner, carry on the old business.

On the Way to British Columbia

Sin,—The passage from Summerside to Point DuChene on the Princess of Wales was most delightful trip. The day was | beautiful, with a bracing, cool breeze from | the west—a marked contrast to the heat of the previous week. Cupt. Cameron and other officers of the boat added to the pleasure of a trip on this good steamer. There was a goodiy number of American and Canadian tourists on board returning to their homes after having spent weeks in various summer resorts, all in high admir- ation of our Island home

On landing at Point DuChene, we met | the Grand Old Man, Sir John Macdonald, Lady Macdonald, and Mr, Joseph Pope, private secretary to Sir John A., on a visit to our Province. By the look ot the old chiefain of the Liberal-Conservatives, | judge that he is good for the leadership of the Party of Progress for the next decade.

From Point DuChene to Campbelton we saw little of the country, having passed through it in the night. From Campbel- ton to River DuLoup the country is broken by rugged, rocky lands, and stretches of barren, swampy lands, with some small por- tions of good farming country. The crops all along this line of road are very poor.

The oats is from tliree to _ five inches in growth, just shooting into head, and either burned with rust

or destroyed by an insect, as every field has a yellow cast as if it had been scratched with fire or frost. The potatoes look equally bad, being stunted in growth and stalk so thin and sickly looking that you see the ground through them in looking over fields in any direction Wheat there is none. Barley is very short and thin, showing a yellow cast as if being ready for harvest. Hay there is little, and what little there is is being harvested by the old process of scythe and hand rake.

From River du Loup to Levis it isa better farming country, but I haveseen no oats, barley or potatoes that I would call half a crop, and no wheat to be seen any- where.

From Quebec to Montreal the C, P. R. passes through a fine country, thickly po- pulated-—the lands are level and fairly free from rocks. This is more of a hay country. The hay harvest appears as if about half through, and on those portions mot cut the grass looks dry.and ripened ; but it has a very thick bottom and turns off immense quantities of hay tothe acre. The hay is not of a good quality there being a good deal of couch and other natural grasses. Oats, barley and potatoes are not more than a two-third crop, or what we Islanders would call a half crop. All this country as far as I have’ gone is poorly farmed, and the work is done in the most ancient mode of cultivating the soil. Their implements, their buildings, and all their surroundings are foreign- looking. The inhabitants are mostly of French extraction. They speak the French language, have the French politeness of manners, and all I came in contact with, either on the trains or about the stations, were well, even gaily, dressed, and very in- telligent and sociable. 1 was at a great disadvantage in not having the French tongue as you hear little but French spoken on trains.
