The late number of the * Student,” a little paper published by the students of Hiram College, quotes an extract from a letter written by Mrs. Garfield to her husband over ten years ago, and intended for po eye but his. It fell into the hands of President Hinsdale, who made use of it in a lecture to the studeuts, and, as it showed the qualities of Mrs. Garfield’s mind, and her opinions upon the subject of women’s work, he gave it to the stu- dents. The extract is as follews:—* | am glad to tell that out of all the toil and disappointment of the summer just ended, I have risen up to victery; that silence of thought since you have beeu away has won for my spirit a triumph. I read something like this the other day— ‘There is no healthy thought without labor, and thougli: makes the labor happy.” Perhaps this is the way I have been able to climk up higher. It came tome one merning when I was making bread. I said to myself, ‘Here I am, compelled by an inevitable necessity to make our bread this summer.’ Why not consider it a pleasant occupation, and make it so by trying to see what perfect bread Ican make? It seemed like an

Suspicious Symptoms.

A minister who was perhaps not too careful in his habits was induced by his friends to take the teetotal pledge. His health appeared to suffer, and his doctor ordered him to take one glass of punch daily.

** Qh!” said he, ‘‘I dare not. Peggy, my old housekeeper, would tell the whole parish.”

‘When do you shave?” the doctor asked.

‘* In the morning.”

‘* Then,” said the doctor, “ shave at bight; aud when Peggy brings you up your hot water, you can take your glass of punch just before going to bed.”

The miuister afterward appeared to improve iu health and spirits. The doc- tor met Peggy soon afier, and said,

“Tam glad to -hear, Peggy, that your master is betier,”

*‘ Indeed, sir, he’s better, but his brain’s affected ; there’s something wrong wi’ his mind,”

** How?”

‘* Why, doctor, he used to shave at night before going to bed, but now he shaves in the moro, he shaves before dinner, he shaves after dinner, he shaves at night—he’s aye shaviu’.”

The sympioms were, indeed, very sus- picious—Epiror’s Drawer, in Harper's Magazine for December.

How Milton Came to Write “ Para’ dise Regained.”

It was at the time of the Great Plague that the poet of ‘*Paradise Lost” took up his abode at Chalfont, and it was through the instrumentality of a conimon friend of his and William Penn's that this retreat was selected. Thomas Ellwood, the Qua- ker, had made Milton’s acquaintance in London some years before, when hunted out of house by the Bucks justices, end read Latin to him in his lodging in Jewin Street. When the plague grew fierce in the city the blind poet bethonght him of his one-time secre'ary, and asked him to fiud him some retreat in his neighberhood. Ellwood took this ‘‘pretty box” for him; and it was here that he suggested to him the idea of ‘*Paradise Regained.” Milton had harded him the manuscript of ‘‘ Paradise Lost” to pass his judgement on. ‘‘I pleasantly said to him,” Ellwood relates his Life, ‘* ‘Thou hast said much here of Paradise. lost, but what hast thou to say of Paradise found?’ He made me no answer, but sat some time in muse ; then broke off that discourse and fell upon another subject. After the sick- ness was over, and the city well cleansed, he returned thither ; and when afterward I went to wait om him there, he showed me his second poem called * Paradise Re- gained,” and in a pleasant tene said to me, ‘This is owing to you, for you put it into my head by the question yon put to me at Chalfont, which before | had net thought of.’”—Aurrep T. NEWS NOTES.

Corn can be made to go a great deal farther by grinding before feeding. The gain by adopting this plan will much more than pay for the trouble if any quantity of stock is fed.

Mr. J. W. Borden, of upwards of twenty years postmaster at Canuiug.N.S., died at his home last Friday, and twelve hours later his wife also died. They were aged respectively seveuty-five and sixty-nine years.

A Glasgow policemen has fallen heir to £30,000. The movey was gathered together by a cranky old Scot in South Carolina. He hud a family of daughters but refused to leave them a dollar because they did not er would aot marry High- land men,

According to the Sheffield, Eng., “Daily Telegraph,” a yardever, who had become blind owing to a cataract, dream- ed that if he applied petroleum to his eyes the sight would be restored. The old man (he is 82) strong in his simple faith, carried the dream into effect and his sight was restored,

Rumors of a tailed race of men living in the interior of Borneo have often been heard, though probably ro one seriously believed them. Carl Beck, a recent traveller in Borneo, was, however, assured by some of his native com- panions that such a race really did exist in the interior, somewhere about the upper course of the Barita.

Mr. Daniel Graat, Liberal member of Parliament for Marylebone, speaking at a large meeting in Londou, on November 9th, declared, amid much cheering, that the growing theught in England was to- ward republicanism. Though he was content with the present political con- dition of affairs, the land should be for the people, in accordance with the con- stitution. ‘

A Gleucestershire, England, nobleman * is making a novel experiment to render Jand more remunerative. He has planted thirteen acres with gooseberry and cur- rant trees, eleven acres with strawberry plants, and thirty-five acres with plum trees ; while a large portion of park and wood of 200 acres have been converted into rabbit warrens, and surrounded with iron fencing.

From the day you slip a halter over a young horse’s ears he should be encour- aged to look to you like a child for all his litthe wants and simple pleasures. He shoald come cavtering up from the farthest corner of the paddock when he hears your voice, should ask to have his nose rubbed, his head stroked, his neck pattec, with those honest pleading looks which make the confidence of a dumb creature so touching.

The following statistics of the work of United States fishermen are taken from the report of a special agen! of the fishery division of the Uuited States Census Bureau, for the year 1879:—In the eight States bordering .on the g-eat northern lakes, including Peunsylvania, which has a comparatively limited lake frontage, there were 5.050 fishermen and 2,656 vessels, boats and steam tugs en- gaged in taking fish. The value of these vessels, etc., was $266,C0), and the total value of all apparatus and acce-sories was .$1,345,975. Of the eight States Michigan stands at the head as regards number of men, and Ohio in the value of investments, the latter being $233,000; the total fishing properties of the eight being valued at $497,400 in 1879. Michigan, notwithstanding the less value of her investments, stauds far ahead in the value of fish taken. Of the total, which was $1,652,900, her share was $711,695; the next bemg Ohio, at
