“Messrs. Thomas Biggar and Sons, Chapelton Delbeattie, shipped a splendid consignment of Galloways for Canada by the Dominion steam- ship Brooklyn, from Liverpoo! last week. They comprised forty cows and heifers and twenty- seven bulls. In addition to a large consignment from their own herd, there were selections from the herds of Mr. Villiers, Closeburn Hall; Messrs, Shennan, Balig; the Earl of Galloway, the Earl of Selkirk, Sir Robert Jardine, Bart, M. P. of Castlemilk; Mr. Cunninham, Tarbreoch; Mr. James Graham (formerly of Parcelstown); Mr. Drew, of Craigencallie; and Mr, Webster, Airds, The Dumfries Courier says the bulls inciuded the famous Jobn Highleandman, first prize winner at the Highland Society of Scotland, and whose pro- duce have won premier honors at the Royal of England ; also Corporal, own brother to the first prize yearling heifer of Aberdeen, and twenty- five bull calves. The heifers were a specialiy gran@ lot, in respect alike ‘of pedigree and per- sonal merit—a number of them having taken prizes at Highland Society and local shows. Three of them were of the renowned Parcels- town Hannah tribe, and the following justly celebrated tribes weré also very favorably repre- sented :—The Balig Susan, Tidy, Blackie, and Black Beauty tribe; the Chapelton Music, Ranee, Bess of Biaiket families, in calf to the Highland Society champion bull Crusader; a member of the Mary of Parcelstown family from Closeburn Hall; daughters of Harden and Mosstropper of Drumlanrig, Highland Society first prize bulls; and the produce of such well known bulls as Scottish Borderer, Prince Victer, Cromwell, 3aliol, Chelmsford, and Stanley 2nd of Drum- lanvig. This consignment is of such exception- ally high merit that they are certain to add to the reputation of the Galloways on the other side of the Atlantic.”
Meeting at Bridge.
On Thursday, 7th January, inst., not- withstanding the unfavorable state of the roads and the inclemency of the weather. a large and respectable andience gathered in the School House at Cardigan Bridge, to listen to Hon. Senator Howlan’s lecture on the proposed Subway across Northumber- land Straits.
The meeting was organized by appointing Wm, P. Lewis, Esq , Chairman, who, in a few pointed words, explained the purport of the meeting and introduced Senator Howlan to the audience. That gentleman, in an able address of about two hours duration, treated the history of the negoti- ations that brought about Confederation. and explained the reasons why he had been induced to accept what are usuelly known as the Pope-Howilan Terms. After pointing out the necessity that existed of having that part of the bargain carried out, that guar- anteed ‘‘efficient steam service for the con- veyance of mails and passengers between the Island and the Dominion, winter and summer,” he described and explained the surveys that had heen made at the Capes, and showed that nature had formed a bed particularly snitable for laying a Subway hatween Cape Traverse and Jourmain Reef. He explained the construction and working of the proposed Subway, and after a brilliant peroration, resumed his seat amidst the applause of his audience.
The following resolution was proposed by George F. Owen and seconded by John G Scrimegeour, each of whom made a few remarks, complimenting Senator Howlan on the energy and ability he had displayed in advocating this very important subject ; Whereas, this meeting has derived ,reat plea- sure and instruction from listening to the des- cription and explanations given by Hon. Senator Howlan, of the proposed Subway across the Northumberland Straits ; and
Whereas, no better scheme has been brought to the notice of the people of this Province as a means by which the Dominioa Government will be enabled to carry out that part of the ‘’erms of Confederation which guarantees “to establish and maintain efficient steam service for the con- veyance of mails and passengers between the Isiand and the Dominion, winter and summer, thus placing the Island in couiinuous communi- cation with the Intercolonial Railway and the Railway system of the Domin on” ; therefore Resolved, that we respectfully urge upon the Dominion Government the necessity of causing such inquiries to be made as will fully demon- strate the practicability, or otherwise, of said Subway ; and futher
Resolved, that this meeting hereby tender Hon. Senator (iowlan their hearty thanks for the un tiring energy with which he has brought this most important matter to the atiention of the people, not only of this Province but of the whole Dominion; and we bereby ask our representa- tives in the Dominion Parliament to lend such assistance to Senator Howlan us will strengthen his hands in carrying this matter to a successful end.

A vote of thanks was tendered the chair- man, three cheers were given for Senator Hoewlan, and the meeting dispersed.

An incident years ago in the riding school of the Scots Greys, of which a man named Somerville, who recently died at Toronto, was the victim, led to an investi- gation that was largely instrumental in bringing about the abolition of flogging in the army. An occurrence is reported from Vienna, which, like the Somerville case, may also lead to an army reform. An artillery recruit, named Aubin, liad become the butt of the military riding school at Vannes, on acconnt cf his inability to retain his seat, way, isa nephew of Marshal Bezaine, ths officer in charge, ordered the man to be tied upon his horse, which was whipped around the ring. The animal tock fright and threw Aubin ; but unable to free him- self he was dragged on gashed and bleeding for some minutes, receiving injuries which proved fatal, An investigation was held, and M. Bazaine has been put on the retired list. It is to be feared that the brutalities of the riding schoo! are not confined to the Continent and this case of incidental murder mav have a beneficial effect nearer home than Vienna.

The oyster opening maten for $250 aside, between Frank Barrett of Norfolk, Va., and John Gillen, of New York, Barrett to open. 2.500 oysters to Giilen’s 2,300, wes won by Barrett in 2 hours 16 minutes and 434 seconds, the best time on record. Giilen opened his 2,300 oysteis in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 324 seconds. Barrett used a hammer and knite,while Gillen only used a knife.
H. J. Guy, formerly a clerk in the Heali- fax Bank, lJatterly relensed from Dorchers- ter, arrived in Portland, Maine, a few days ago, in search of his wite Katie and & man named Fraser Allan, with whom she eloped from Dartmouth, N. 8., taking her two children and one of Allen's with them, It appears that the couple lived in Portland for some time. They left a few weeks ayo and went to Waterville, to which place Guy followed them.
An exciting story has just reached Ot- tawa. It appears that two shantymen, be- longing to Brennan’s shanty, on the Pete- wawa River, steried out for a waik through the woods one day last week, taking their axes with them. They had not pr ceeded far before they were attacked by a femiched wolf. Taken so suddenly unawares, they had no other resource than to defend them- selves. Retreating with their faces to the ferocious enimal, they reached the ice on Lake Casty, when they succecded in des- patching it.
Advices from Calgary state that all the Councillors disqualified by Judge Travis have been returned by the electors. Mr. Cayley’s days of grace baving expired, over 200 of the citizens placed him io @ wagon, drawn by themselves, and jed by the town band, escorted him around the streets, with cheers for him and the old Council Passing Jvdge Travis’ house greans for the Judge were enthusiastically given. In the evening the municipal victory was cele- brated by bonfires and a torchlight proces- sion. Judge Travis did not order the arrest of Mr. Cayley on Monday, but on the following day that gentleman was taken to the Mounted Police barrecks, to put in his sentence fer contempt o° court.
