Great Big Sea. Need I say more?

In the four years since forming in a tiny fishing village in Newfoundland, Great Big Sea has become a star both at home and abroad. In Canada, the band’s major label debut Up, was certified platinum for sales in excess of 100,000 copies. They have sold out concerts right across the country, been nominated for two Juno Awards and fans have voted them Entertainer of the Year for two consecutive years at the ECMAs.

Then came 1998.

Pop/ Rock Artist of the Year. Winners. Group of the Year? Winners. The same goes for Album of the Year, Best Single, and, you guessed it—— Entertainers of the Year. Ifthe were nominated, they took it. I guess the big question is, what's next?

Play, the band’s most recent work, is already climbing the charts

\s successful as Great Big Sea is, they cannot over- shadow some of Newfoundland’s other talented artists. The Celtic Connection was nominated in the Roots/ Traditional Vocal category. Also, Scott Goudie and Neil Bishop’s CD, recorded live at the Fat Cat Blues Bar in St. John’s earned them a nomination in the Blues/ Gospel section.

Then there are The Punters, who have performed for artists from The Rock to the Big Apple. Nominated with the Great Ones in the Group of the Year category, they are one of Atlantic Canada’s rising roots-driven machines.

Who’s laughing now.
