There was excitement in Ettingville, Staten Island, Friday last, caused by the repert that Constable Hibert L. Poilion of that village had actually seen and been at- | tacked by a John Fisher, a resident of the same village, and who 1s an oyster grower and a planter, partially cor- roborated Poillon’s story. Mr. Poillon, however, exhibited an oar, the blade of which was crunched in hali lengthwise. This, it was declared, was

done by the marine monster whipping its head around suddenly and biting the oar when one of the party attempted to hit it on the head with that implement. All of them agree that the crunching of the oar between the teeth of the serpent was posi- tively heard by them, and more positively reslized in the effect on their nerves.

The monster then dropped its head into the water, and, with an undulating motion it speedily vanished. They believe it to be about twenty-five feet long, and regret very much that the approach of darkness prevented them from capturing it. Messrs. Fisher and Poillon, when accused by their neighbors of inventing the above story, went before a local Justica of the Peace, it is said, and made affidavit to the facts sub- stantially as given above.

in the northwest. It seemed as though the bluff in that direction had suddenly shot upward to a height of 1,000 feet, so solid and compact did this icy wall appear. In a second of time the storm burst with appalling fury, and the windows, which had by the mildness of the atmosphere become clear of frost, were heavily coated with clinging smow on the outside and heavy frosted particles on the inside. The air grew terribly cold, and was darkened by flying frost and snow. The high walls of the hotel directly opposite were not to be seen. All objects were hidden by the flying and rapidly driven snow. People on the streets sought shelter, and the stores were temporarily used for protection from the fierceness of the howling blast. Darker grew the atmosphere, to such an extent that business in the office was stopped until lights were procured.” a oo
