THOSE WHO ARE laboring under the impression that Pat McMurtry was just. a stepping stone for George Chuvalo must have received quite a jolt lam Friday night

The Canadian champion, who was considered ready for the top brass in the world‘s heavyweight divisio , just didn’t have what it takes against the unranked ermarine. The 26-year-old MloMurtry displayed teriffic boxing skill and taught Chuvalo a mighty expensive lession. Irish Pat showed that he could do more than dish it out. He took Chuvalo’s best in that second round, was close to a knockout victim but fought the Canadian oilf with his great boxing knowledge.

After that it was a sorry story for Chuvalo and his many followers. Big George was a clumsy figure from then ,on, al- though he did rally briefly in the ninth. But it was to no avail as McMurtry had an answer to his every move. The television patrons were not on the edge of their chairs waiting for the decision. The only thing folks waited to hear was how badly the officials figured Chuvalo had been beaten. There wasn’t much difference in the cards of the three officials. One was 82, another 7-3 and the third 8-1-1.

YOU WOULD FIND a lot of folks before l'lrlday’s fight that would insist that the Toronto boy was championship material. There are some who still stick to that opinion. But We are certain that a great many who sang George’s praises earlier are not doing that after his dismal showing last Friday. Chuvalo looked awful trying to avoid those jabs of McMurtry. He appeared to have no defence whatever as the Irishman kept pounding away at the Canadians face.

There’s no denying that Chuvalo's has a terrific punch. But he got very little chance to use it after that second round. He was facing a guy who knew how to defend himself and could deal out plenty of punishment as well.

Chuvalo may have the makings of a champion. But he has a tremend’uous lot to learn. judging by his showing against Mc- Murtry. And after all. Pat was ranked in the first ten by the fellows who are supposed to know what they are talking about.

He has along way to come.

THE NEW YORK YANKEES certainly were liberal with their world series money. The boys forgot nobody when they went into conference on how to split the ‘gravy’ up.

Virgil Trucks. relief pitcher came to the Bombers in June, two months after the season was underway. yet he received a full share. just the same amount as Bob Turley who won two

, world series games and saved a third.

Sal Maglie was released by the Stengelites on June 14 but the Yankees didn't forget the Barber when they were dividing the spoils. They cut Sal in for half a share which was a/ generous gesture to say the least.

42-year-old Murray Dickson was ready to call it quits early this season. He was laboring with the Kansas City Athletics and decided he had enough. The Yankees changed his mind by acquiring him in late August, just one month before the end of the regular season. Murray was with the New Yorkers from August 26 to be exact and he had two brief appearances in the recent world series. It was well worth his time. His teammates decided the veteran should get three-quarters of a share.

Pretty generous treatment all the way around.

TORONTO SPORT FANS were anyan but a happy lot following that crushing defeat of George Chuvalo Friday night. Mlost of the Queen City folks were counting on a Chuvalo vic- tory but they received a really big dissippointment.

However Saturday certainly didn’t follow the same pattern for those who like to howl for Tomato entries in Big Four Foot- ball and the National Hockey League. The Argonauts. who re- cently have come to life crushed Ottawa Rough Riders 41-0 while Hamilton was easily disposing of Montreal Alouettes. That night the Maple Leafs scored their first victory of the season by edging Boston 3-2.

ARGONAUTS. led by Ronnie Knox. trail Montreal for the last playoff position by three points. Each team has three games left, with two of them against each other The Argos play their other fixture against Ottawa and Alouettes entertain Hamilton Tiger-Cats. If the Argos can continue their terrific pacce (they’ve got 78 points in the past two games against the top clubs—and none scored against them) and win their three remaining games. they will make the playoffs. If this should happen. then Hamilton and Ottawa had better beware. This Toronto outfit seems to mean business and they’ll give it everything to pull this last playoff spot out of the fire.

There’s a lot of fun left in the Big Four yet.

THE MAPLE LEAFS looked good in their win over Boston. They had served notice Thursday night in Montreal that they would be rtough. The Canadiens had their hands full beating the Reay-coached team 4-3. Saturday night they were full value for their triumph. Stewart played a whale of a good game and Allan Stanley looks likes he will be a big help to the Leafs.

Rangers surprised by battling Canadians to a 2-2 tie and Detroit handed Chicago its first defeat of the season. All of which. we think. is an indication that this year’s Natonal Hoc- key League is going to produce the best competition in a long, long time. -

CONGRATULATIONS to Saint Dunstan's football team who rolled to a 45-20 triumph over Acadia University on Saturday at Wolfville. It was the second win in as many starts for the Red and White and left them tied for top spot with Mount Allison who crushed Saint Thomas 47-13.

These two leaders meet at St. Dunstan's this coming Sat- urday with the Sackville students, of course, heavy favourites to dispose of the ambitious Red and Whiters. Despite this pre- diction by the experts, Saint Dunstan’s will prove tough nuts for Mount Allison to crack. If the locals plug some of the holes in the defence that were noticeable against St. Mary’s, then the New Brunswickers will need all the skill they possess to come out on top.

Alt any rate. it has the earmarks of a great battle and the largest crowd for many years is expected to watch this big one.

'WE REMIND YOU once again that this Is the night of the hockey meeting at the Sports Arena. The time is 7:30.

TORONTO (OP) Toronto MamPie Leafs are probably wish ing they could play more Na.- tional Hockey League games against Boston Bruins. Leafs with Ron Stewart scoring two goals, edged Bruins 3-2 Saturday night for their first victory of the sea- son after three consecutive losses.

Bruins lost the services of de- fenceman Doug Mohns in the sec- ond period. He suffered a frac- tured jaxw when checked along the boards.

Boston took an early 1-0 lead and, after Leafs had gone ahead 2—1 in the second period. it ap- peared Bruins might salvage a tie when they scored early in the third. But Stewart scored his game-winning goal at 6:49. FIRST NHL GOAL

In Hamilton’s Civic Stadium, the third-place Als tried desper- ately to salvage a win. They held Tiger-Cats to a 7-3 half-time lead, but Hamilton. the greatest sec- ond - half scoring team in the league, ran away with a two- touchdown third quarter and an- other in the final period.

Racetrack Fire Kills 27 Horses

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) An estimated 27 race horses were killed and 27 others injured Sun- day when fire swept the stable area at Marlboro race track.

Two barns were destroyed and two others damaged as a stiff northerly wind whipped the flam out of control for an hour.

Soccer Fans Riot Against Referee's Call

CATANI-A, Sicily (APi—Twenty policemen and an undetermined number of soccer fans were in- jured Sunday in a riot against a referee's decision. The crowd be- sieged the stadium for three hours, keeping the official a vir- tual prisoner.

Rescued After Nighimorish 2 Days At Sea

VANCOUVER (OP) —— A Fern- daie, Wa sh., fisherman was pulled from the sea Friday by the B ritis h freighter Pacific Stronghold following a night- marish two days in which his boat broke down and he was forced to swim for his life.

Raymond Hong, about 20, was picked up by the 11,300 — ton freighter oflf Point Roberts. south of here, after he had drifted and prayed for three hours, thrashing the icy waters to keep afloat.

His struggle for survival began Wednesday when his small gill- netter, loaded with fish, broke down in dark grey fog in few miles off Point Robert-s.

Trying to attract attention, he fell overboard but managed to pull himself aboard again. But the boat began to fill with water, and finally settled to her gun- wales.

Friday morning he found him- self swimming, alone, in a cold, silent sea.

They gave him clothing, food, and a warm cabin.

Richard powered Montreal with a pair of goals as the Canadiens rallied in the final period to turn back the winless New York Rang- ers 5-3. The Rocket‘s second goal broke a 3-3 tie and Boom Boom Geoffrion added the clincher in the last minute as the Canadians overcame a two-goal deficit in the exciting National Hockey League game. The Rocket took charge early in the second period after New York had jumped off to a 3-1 lead. He whipped in a 15-footer to cap a power play and bring the Canadiens back into conten- tion.

Montreal scored two goals in 20 seconds early in the final period to take the lead for good. The Rocket's brother, Henri, slapped in the equalizer at 15:50 and then Maurice broke away and drilled home a high, 20-foot angle shot. The Rangers pulled goalie Gump Worsley'in the final min- ute in an effort to gain a tie. But the manoeuvre backfired as Geodfrion scored on an open net. TOOK EARLY LEAD

Stasiuk’s feat was the second hat trick scored against the Black Hawks in two days, Detroit's Alex Delvecchio having done it Saturday afternoon.

The fourth Boston goal was scored by Stasiuk‘s linema-te, Johnny Bucyk, who also gained credit for assists on two of Sta- siuk‘s markers.

Chicago’s line tally was made by Bobby Hull late in the final period.

FALL FROM TOP SPOT

The loss dropped the Black Hawks from a firstpla-ce tie with Montreal, which defeated New York 5-3 Sunday night. The tri- umph was the second of the sea- son for the Bruins.

Only six penalties were called by referee Red Storey, but Hull and Boston's Guy Gendron each were given fivedminute raps for fighting in the final period.

A goal by Hiull was disallowed in the second frame because ref- eree Storey had been knocked down by the Chicago skaters and temporarily stunned. According to NHL rules. when an official is injured play automatically stops.
