This Convention was held in Crapaud Hall on Friday, the 15:h inst. R. H. Me- Donald, Esq. Vice-President, oceupied the chair. Mr. Stewart, Secretary and Treasurer, also W. McN. Simpson, Wm. Laird, Hon, David Laird, Stephen Black, Searletown, John McNeill, New Glasgow, John Moore, W J Newsom, John Lea, W C. Lea, Crapaud, John Muirhead, Tryon, Geo. Newsom, Chas. Collett, O. B. Wad- man and others were present.
After the minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted, Hon. David Laird and Wm. McN. Simpson spoke in favor of the organization and impressed the farmers with the idea of thorough organization. The following officers were then appoint- ed for the ensuing year :—
President—John Moore. Vice-President—Wm. McN. Simpson. Secy-Treas—Wm. Stewart, (re-elected. ) Executive Committee—Alex. Laird, Wm. McNeill Simpson, S R Black, W. C. Lea and R. H. McDonald.
The public meeting in the evening was not as largely attended as it should have been. The farmers say that it was not generally known. VU. Wadman, Esq., gxve an address of welcome. The follow- ing gentlemen delivered interesting and in- structive addresses, viz: on. David Laird, R. H. McDonald, St. Eleanor’s, N.C. Lea, The Secretary, Mr. Stewart, read an interesting article on fruit culture, } which was followed by an address by Mr. McNeill, of Cavendish.
A committee was appointed to prepare subjects for discussion at the next meeting in January, after which the meeting was closed.

Dear TeacuEeR,—We, the inhabitants of Glenaladale School District, cannot allow you to depart from our midst without ex- pressing our appreciation of your services in this locality.
You have proved yourself to be atrue member of society, and your noble examp!e, your modest and affable manner, will be long remembered and felt amongst us. During the four years you have had charge of our school you have proved your- self to be a successful teacher, and the creditable condition of the school is largely due to your diligence and perseverance.
By your incessant effosts for the welfare of the pupils committed to your charge, youhave endeared yourself not only to them but to their pareuts as well. Whilst deeply interested in the intellectual and moral education of the children, you have also shown the same interest in their re- ligious instruction; and though we regret to luss your genial presence and valuable instructions, we trust that your success in the past is but a foretaste of mcre glorious success in the future.

I assure you, dear friends, that the four happy years spent in your midst will form an epoch in my life’s early history which can never be effaced. I thank you for the unremitting kindness you have always shown me, and also the pupils for the warm affection and respect which they slways extended towards me; and be assured that wherever Divine Providence may direct me, wherever my future lot may be cast, I can never forget the many happy days I spent in Tracadie Cross

Railways and Canals.
(The Empire. )
We underetand that during the present recess of Parliament the Minister of Rail- ways and Canals will visit all the different works which are under charge of hia de- partment, in the various provinces. His visit will he one of thorough inspection and careful enquiry into every branch of the canal and Government railway manage- ment, with a view of becoming thoroughly scquainted with every detail and every requirement of these important services. This is as it should be, for there is no de- partment of Government where a_ well-ia- formed and practical head may be of greater use to the trade and treasury of the country than in this department.
When the present minister was selected for the post, those who knew him best were not slow toexpress the opinion that he would prove himself one of the ablest and most practical men that Canada has
had in charge of her great canals and railways. That this opinion was a safe one, his few months of
office have very clearly demonstrated. He has shown himself to have secured a thorough grasp of his duties, a broad appreciation of the wants of the public service, and a knowledge of detail that has already enabled him to make important reductions in expendituere without doing violence to the wants of the country’s com- merce. It is, we have no doubt, with a view te still further efficiency and still greater economy that he will make the in»pection referred to. Hon, Mr. Haggart is especially fitted to make his visit to these public works of value both to Parliament and the country. He is a practical business man of long and wide experience, posseses a clear head and a resoluteness of pur and conviction that will allow neither the specious theories nor the sycophancies of officialdom to interfere with his better judgment or his determination to give the country a dollar's service for a dollar's pay.

Persenal.
Mr. Theodore Davie, who becomes Premier of British Columbia, by succession owing to the death of Mr. Robson, the late Premier, is an Englishman, and was born in 1852 He is a lawyer, and holds the office of Attorney- General. The English are strong in the Pa- cific Province, and it may be mentioned asa curious fact that there is not a single native born Canadian in the Cabinet. Mr. Pooley, Presi lent of the Council, is an Englishman, as are Mr. Turner, the Financial Secretary, and Col. Baker, the Minister of Finance and Education. There is one Irishman in the Cabinet, Mr. Vernon, Chief Commissioner of Works, but, as he was educated for the Royal Engineers, he is probably quite as much of an Englishman as bis colleagues.
The Rev David Dudley Field, D. D., had a large family, four members of which reached pational, one, if pot more, world-wide distinction The father was born in 1781 and lived to hear of his son Cyrus’s —- success, Gying on the 15th of April, 1867. Like his more famous son, he died at Stock- bridge, Mass. The eldest of his sons was bis pamesake, David Dudley Field, the lawyer whose learning as displayed in his ‘‘Outlines of an International Code” was acknowledged in flattering terms by some of the most distinguished jurists of Europe. As a law reformer and codifer he had few equals and no superior in his time He was in his 34th year when, after travelling in South Americ+, his attention was fruitfully directed to the uestion of telegraphy. Stephen Johnson ield, three years older, (David Dudley was fourteen years older) than Cyrus was, like David, a jurist. He spent his early years in the Levant. He was successful in adjusting conflicting claims based on difference of laws. He was made a judge of the Supreme Court of California. Henry Martin Feld was, like his father, a clergyman. Like all the family, he loved travel and was the author of several books on Ireland, Egypt, Palestine, Arabia, Turkey, Greece, Japan, etc. He also wrote a history of the Irish rebellion of 1798.

Srassep.—St. John, N B., has enjoy- ed several stabbing affrays of late. The first was that of a negro who was stabbed at a picnic. The last is a more serious case. On Thursday morning two men, the steward and a sailor off the bark G. S. Penery received bad cuts in the leg. The story of the sailor is that he wentto the galley door and made a request of that of- ficial. The cook answered sharply, and a quarrel ensued. Finally the steward douched the sailor with hot water and picked up his carving knife. They clinch- ed and in the struggle both were wounded, the steward severely, having a severe cut on his leg about five inches deep. The cut extended around the inside of the leg for some distance. The sailor sustained a stab about six inches deep running around the front of the leg, but fortunately severing ao arteries The knife was a large carver, very sharp, with » blade fully a foot long and about an inch broad. Both the men are now in hospital.
