Bishop McIntyre is a venerable prelate, who is justly regarded by all demoninations of people in his own “tight little isle” as a gentleman of high inteliectual gifts added to purity of heart and modesty of bearing. Over twenty-five years ago the patriarchal bishop and the pious and zealous Bishop Rogers, of Chatham, N. B.. were consecrated together, and the latter saintly man is wont to call them ‘twin brothers.” During all the years each has been faithful to his trust and has done good service to the cause of Him whom they serve. Their friends are al- most as numerous among those professing the Protestant faith as among the laity of their own body, they are both liberal, charitably disposed prelates.

Reading in Total Darkness.

Though M. Chevreul, the veteran French chemist, will complete his 100th year on the last day of this month, he had an ex- perience a day or two ago of which it is safe to say he would search his souvenirs in vain for a parallel. He received a visit in his laboratory from the Chinese mission in Paris, and the conversation naturally turn- ing on the subjects of light and color, which M. Chevreul has spent his life in investi- gating. One of the party astonished him by declaring that he could see perfectly without light, and he actually read some pages of a book in the dark. M. Chevreul doubtless knows that a predecessor of his own, Jerome Cardan, a famous savant of the sixteenth century, was credited with the same power. And the younger Scaliger assures us thet when he awoke from his brief slumbers he was able to read in the dark without light- ing hislamp. The younger Scaliger was rather given to boasting ; and this state- ment of his has usually been classed with that of his eminent contemporary and philological rival, the learned Buchmann, who claimed to have discovered a key to

Militia Inspection.

OUR GARRISO® ARTILLERY UNDER CRITICISM,

Nos. Land 2 Batteries of the P. E. I. Provisional Brigade of Garrison Artillery were inspected yesterday afternoon on the Exhibition Grounds, by Lieut. Col. Irwin, Inspector of Artillery for Canada. The Artillery Band, which has been lately attached to the Brigade, paraded in uniform for the first time, and created quite a favor- able impression upon all who saw them.

After the inspection of the Batteries in company and gun drill, which occupied about three hours, the Inspector made a few very appropriate remarks to the officers and men before dismissing them. He said he was not often accused of giving credit where it was not deserved, and very often it was thought his’ praise was not in exeess of what the occasion required. On this occasion he regretted having to say that in company drill, these Batteries did not do so well as he has seen them do on previous inspections, but this was account- ed for, he supposed, by the fact that they had paid more aitention, as he had been informed, to gun drill, which was, he must say, excellent, The non-commissioned officers and gunners of both batteries seen- ed to be well posted in gun drill, but he was particularly well pleased with the

He complimented the Batteries upon having provided themselves with ‘helmets, and he was very glad indeed to be able to say that, in the general appearance of these Batteries, in the cleanliness of their arms and accoutrements, and the smartness of their whole turn out, they had not deteriorated.

He further said that they were to be con- gratulated upon having such a good band. It was certainly a great acquisition to the Brigade. It men very materially in their marching, and created an esprit de which would certainly tend to promote the general efficiency of the Brigade.

Bijou is Abdallah Messenger stock, and was raised by Mr. McNeill, of West River. When Bijou was about five years of age, he was sold by Mr. MeNeill to Mr. Thomas Essory, who kept him about six months after which he became the property of Mr. Keegan, the well-known horse-buyer of Augusta, Me. » Shortly after Mr. Keegan had taken Bijou home, he sold him to a gentleman—a good judge of horseflesh who was quick to discover that in the P. E. Island ‘‘duffer” he had the makings of a first-class trotter. When this gentleman had developed Bijou’s trotting powers to some extent, he sold him, realizing a hand- some profit on his investment. From this time on Bijou’s star was in the ascendant, and after he made the record of 2.274 last autumn, fabulous sums were offered and refused for him. After he had changed hands several times he became the prop- erty of Mr. Clarke, of Boston, who is the present owner of the ‘“‘boranza.” Bijou is a brother of Mountain Girl, the ‘‘flyer” recently sold by Mr. J. F. Powers of this city to Mr. Samuel Sterns, of Bangor, Me., as well as of several others of local repute.

George Lee is All Right stock and was formerly known as Sir Selby. He was raised by Robert Hodgson, Esq., of this city, and was quite a “‘goer’ previous to his leaving the Island, about two years ago. He is at present owned by a gentleman in Boston, who is quite proud of him—as well he might be.

A Premonition of Death.

Noting the fatal accident to young Chip- man, a brakeman onthe Spring Hill and Parrsboro Railway, the Amherst (razette says :—-Deceased was about 22 years of age a very steady and industrious young man, and the only support of a widow. A very sad feature in the case is shown in the fact that for some days previous to the young man’s death his widowed mother was fully satisfied in her mind that he was shortly to be kill@@, and one night fancied she heard him ery and ran to the track in her night dress, having been soundly asleep. So strongly was she impressed with this idea that her neighbors ‘had great difficulty in restraining her tears and mournings. Young Chapman was a good, quiet fellow, and shortly intended marrying a young lady, who is completely broken up at the sad affair.”

The climate in Greenland in summer, as described by Civil Engineer Peary, df the U.S. Navy, is hardly alluring. ‘*Flowers are blooming,” he writes, ‘‘alongside of beds of snow,” and ‘‘rain, snow, fog, wind, calm, tropical sunshine, and freezing cold” follow each other in such rapid succession that the place would hardly be chosen as a permanent residence. The sun is hot at noon, but ‘the moment he disappears ice begins to form.”
