A Farat Miatake.—The Summerside correspondent of the Guardian says: A valuable fox hound belonging to Mr. Jar- vie P. Tanton, of St. E'eanor’s, was shot at Ellerslie a few deyeago. Mr. Tanton and Mr. Harry Williams, of Bideford, were out fox hunting, and were ov the trail of a black tox, when some unknown parties, who were probably after the same game, shot the dog. Mr. Tanton valued the dog at from $30 to $50.

A Kixpty Act.—The League of the Cro«s Band, assisted by a num ber of ladies and gentlemen from the city, gave an en— tertainment at the Hospital for the Insane last evening. The programme consisted of band selections,vocal solos and instrumen- tal music, which was greatly enjoyed by ull present. After the performance the party were entertained by the managers of the Hospital, and they epeak in the high- est terms of the kindnesses received. Itis pleasing to see efforts euch as this made to l'ghten in some degree the gloom of the unfortunate people at Falconwood, and in this connection it may be pointed out that the League of the Gross Band is always ready and willing to assist in any good cause.

A NEW INDUSTRY? Sir,—Our City Council have power, in the words of the Act of Iucerporation, “to grant exemptions from taxation to any new indusiries coming into the city anc not in existence at the time an application for exemption is made.” Beyond this they are absolutely powerless. Is the killing, curing and slipping of meats a new industry in Chariottetown? Have we not several large establishments amongst | us, combining every one of these features? If so, can it be said that such industry is “ not imexistence at the time an appli- cation for exemption is made”? In no sense can the business upon which the Messrs. Rattenbury ask the City Counci! for ten to twelve thousand doilars, or its equivalert, be called a new industry. On the contrary, it is the oldest, most pro- minent and most important in our City. It is said tnat this establishment is to be conducted under new method-, and aided by more modern appliances. But this will not meet the legal requirement. The industry itself must be a new one, not the machinery nor the methods of mausge- ment. The Council, therefore, cannot grant this exemption, in the writer’s opinion—it is beyond their power. Had Messrs. Jones & McRae, the pioneer fruit canner, made aa application of this kind, their position would have been more for- midable. Itis for such as this that the Act was iutenaed. Of what benefit would this proposed packing establishment prove to the cily ?. At present the farmer kills his pork, brings it to town, converts it into cash, with which be pays his bills or makes necessary purchases, thus circulating the money amongst us. The bayer cuts, cures, packs and ships the product, giving employment to labor, teamsters, and in- directly to mechanics, thus benefitting the community in many ways. Under the new propusition. the live hog is bought at the country station, the money spent at the country store, and the animal brought to town by rail and disposed of by machin e:y with a reduced number of hands, then loaded direetly into the cars without the trnckinan’s assistance, and exported. Tae Messrs. Rattenbury are entitled to credit tor their business shrewdness in this matter, but the citizens of Charlotte- town, who have nothing to gain but con- siderable to luse, cannot be expected to voluntarily tax themselves heavily for any purpose. The citizens look tothe City Council to observe the law and safeguard their interests in this matter.

There was eighteen hours’ running fight, and a stubborn resistance on the part of) the Eulahs. Four of the whites, including Dr. Fyfe, were killed and sixteen wound- ed. The expedition found Beninjcity reek- ing with human blood.
