PETER MEETS WATERFOOT

Impossible, you're apt to find, is but a figment of the mind. -Old Mother Nature.

"Did you say something?" asked Peter Rabbit as if he had heard yet wasn't sure that he had heard.

"I said that your eyes didn't fool you after all; You really did see some one." squeaked Jerry Musk- rat. He was on a small mud land- ing near where Peter was sitting on tile shore at the head of the Smiling Fool.

"On the water?" asked Peter. still staring straight nhead at the smooth, shadowy water.

"On the water," agreed Jerry. "it was Waterfoot. I had forgotten him. He really runs on the water for ll short distance, and he is the only Dcrson around here who can that I know of. I dont see him often, That is why I forgot lilm." .

"Who is Waterfoot? That's a funny name," said peter,

”Is is any funnier than the fact that he can walk, or at least run., on the water when no one else can?" squeaked Jerry.

”No-o," admitted Peter. "No, it isn't. If I hadn't seen it done I wouldn't believe it could be dons; As it was, I had to see it twice to really heileve it. I wish he would

North felt that inasmuch as he had been "forced" on the first round and had shown no particu- lar strength. he could well afford to bid for the grand slam”when South himself showed such a huge holding. Actually, South was too aggressive when, having cue-bid at the four-level, he then leaped to six spades.

West, sure that the opponents were prepared for a heart lead. tried the desperation attack of the diamond jack. (This was indeed "desperate," since East, if he had been void of diamonds, would have doubled seven spades to call tor that lead!) South won with the queen, drew trumps, then discarded two clubs on dummy's high dia- moniis. He saw that the diamond suit could he established for an extra discard, so he then ran off the rest of his trumps hoping for a miracle.

West discarded the three and five oi hearts as soon as he could-but this did not help East as it should have! When South led the last trump, East, holding the lrlng-queen of hearts and the king-queen of clubs, had to decide which suit to ungunrd- and he guessed wrong. Thereupon, South cashed in the ace iuid nine of hearts.

East should have realized that iiis partner was trying to help hinil West would not have discarded two hearts and kept onewhc would have to let go the third heart. if he had it, to give East the "count." Thus, East should have knowli what to hold!

'iYou haven't used your eyes," said the other sharply. "I've been around. I've seen you. If I could see you with my tiny eyes you should have been able to see me with your big ones. But some folks never do learn to use their eyes, and that is a good thing for some of us small folks." -

Just then there was a sharp sound from out in the middle of the Smiling Pool. It was the slap of Mrs, Muskrnt's tail on the -water. her danger signal. Jerry plunged into the water with a great splash and a slap of his rubbery tall as he went under. Peter looked to see what had frightened Mrs. Musk- rat but saw nothing. He looked down at the place where his new small acquaintance had been. There was no one there.
