The Duke and Duchess of Connaught ar- rived here yesterday from their fishing ex- pedition to Metapedia. They were met at the Queen’s Wharf by a large number of citizens, headed by the Mayor, who wel- comed them to Quebec. The distinguished party then drove direct to the citidal where they are the guests of Lord and Lady Stanley, who gave a dinner party in their honor.

The Mail’s Ottawa special says: ‘* The Manitoba Government has been notified that forty-six of the fifty-four acts passed by the legislature at its last session, have been allowed by the Federal Government. Among the eignt which have been reserved the two most important ones are the Act abolishing State aided separate schools, and the Act providing that English shall be the official language of the province of Mani toba.

disastrous conflagration in the mining dis- tricts of the Ural Mountain. The iron works at Ufaleisk snd New Jausk, a thousand dwelling houses, four school. houses, three churches, kospitals and maga- zines are completely destroyed. Forty people were burned to death and 18,000 made homeless by the destruction of the towns,

etitors have sent in papers, which have au examined according to the rules of the competition, with the following re- sults :—

Teachers’ prize—Ewen Stewart, George- town,

Scholars’ prize—i1st, May Stewart, Georgetown; 2nd, Regie Stewart, aa 3rd, Wallace M. M.Leod, Port Hill.

There were a lot of excellent papers (both with respest to writing and arrange- ment of words) sent in by, in many in- gtances, young scholars, which shows that the schoul system of this Island is very per- fect and doing excellent work.
