Mixed Pickles

1 small head cabbage, about quart alter chopping

1 quart celery

2 cups cucumbers

2 cups green peppers

1 cup sweet red peppers

2 cups lima beans or string beans

2 cups onions I 2 cups red tomatoes, not too ripe

‘i cup cooking salt

6 cups cider vinegar

3 cups brmvn sugar

4 level tablespoons dry mustard

Chop all the vegetables, not. mo fine; mix and put. them into atone crock, or earthen bowl; cover with the salt, then cover with a plate and press. Next. morning drain, put. vine- ga, sugar and mustard, which is mixed with a little vinegar, and boil slowly 1'6 hours. Put into wide mouthed sterilised bottles", cork, being sure the cork is good and has been boiled for three minutes. When cold, dip in melted wax and pllt. into cool, dry place.

Chow-Chow

l quart large cucumbers cut into 12-inch pieces

l quart very small cucumbers

2 quarts very small onions

2 quarts cauliflower, after washing and separating.

1 will Breen tomatoes cut into small pieces

2 cups shredded red sweet peppers

1 cup grated horseradish

2 cups brown sugar

2 cups dry yellow mustard

2 tablespoons flour

1 tablespoon tumerfc powder

4 quarts best malt vinegar.

Put all vegetables, except the cauli- flower. into stone crock; cover with brine made from one cup of cooking suit and four quarts of boiling water. Let them stand overnight; then drain.

Put the vinegar into preserving

kettle over fire; add dry ingredients, which have been mixed to a smooth paste; stir into boiling vinegar and boil three minutes. Add the vege- tables, boll until tender; then add cauliflower, which has been boiled in plain water 20 minutets. Mix lightly and pack into sterilized Jan. Seal at once. the censor! decisions. but. as neither the censor nor the Appeal Board ever assigns any reason for reiecting a film, the exhibitors complain that they have no means of knowing what will pass muster. On the other hand there are com- plaints from the churches that. of- fensive films are occasionally shown. Though the movie proprietors can appeal against a rejection there is no appeal against. an acceptance, and the only form of protest is a disturb- ance in the theater.

And you know people who enjoy poor health and who bell you of their every symptom and what. this doctor said and that doctor said, and other people who have had operations and whose conversation ever after sounds like a report of a clinic.

Are there people a. perpetual warning to you to put on the soft pedal when you are tempted to talk about yourself and your belongings, or do you delude yourself into the belief that every one is waiting with belated breath to hear you blow your own horn? Do you believe that your children are so peculiarly gifted that thegeneral publ ic longs to listen to their infantile born mots and to learn all the thrilling details of their hobblelehoy schooldays and drugstore flirtations? ' .

All of us know husbands and wives who stage their fights in public and who seem to wait for an audience before which m tell each other of their

barrassment, while husbands told their wives to- shut up, they didn't know what. they were talking about, or Jeered at their wives for tcllingan old story, or raised ructlons about the size of a bill.

And‘ all of us have endured the agony of automobiles rides in which the wife was a back-seat chauffeur who kept up a running fire of directions to her husband to go faster or go slower, or m watch out for the traffic cop. or the woman crossing the street, or not to go so near the edge of the road. And we have gone out to restaurants With married couples when the wife berated the husband for the table he selected, or the dinner not. being good, or the waiters’ service being poor, and we have been at the theatre with hus- bands and wives when the wife pulled ofl a, far more hair-raising scene with her husband than was done on the stage.

All of us know men and women who are killing the love of their wives and husbands by their neglect, by their coldness and their selfishness. We can see them paving the way to the divorce courts and laying the ax to the foundations of their houiec.

This is Mr. A, who married a beautiful and attractive girl of in ultra- feminine type, one of the sensitive clinging women to whom lovc and fen- derness are as essential as the air she breathes, but A. is absorbed in his business and his golf and he feels that. he does his full duty to his wife when he feeds and clothes her and provides her with a home. There is Mrs. B., who is one of the women who thinks that. matrimony gives a woman the right to slump and that it. isn‘t worth while trying to vamp a man any longer after you have caught him. She has let herself get fat. and frumpy and dull and uninteresting. There ll never a meal in her house that isn't. first aid to the Coroner, and all the conversation her hus- band gets at home is peevish, fretful, whining and complaining about how bad the children are and why doesn't he make more money.

And we who look on marvel that. Mrs. B. can't see that |ho is driving her husband away from her into the arms of any fairly Rood-looking woman who in well groomed, and who will flatter and Jolly him a little. and that it is Just a question of time until Ala wife slopes with a glib love-maker.
