NEW YORK (AP) — A long- awalted reaction hit the stock mar- ket last week and sent prices down in the hardest fall in four years.

The background of the break and the subsequent rebound in easily documented. In the middle of last Sepiember. the stock market hit its low of the year and then started a rally that hardly paused for breath for nearly nine months.

Many traders and others have been standing around waiting for the market to go into a substantial but normal reaction.

On Tuesday it came. There was no warning. Shortly after the start of the second hour of trading. sell- ing on a large scale started and mushroomed with such rapidity that the tape fell as much as four minutes behind in reporting the progress of buying and selling on the floor of the New York stock exchange.

Almost everything was dumped into the selling hopper — steels, motors, oils. railroads. aircraft: and others.

On the whole. the reaction on that and the following day was much less than many expected. The AP average of 60 stocks on Tuesday dropped $2.90. That was the greatest retreat for the aver- aze since the start of the Korean war four years ago. ,

Thursday and Friday the market rcbounded with quite 1 show of vigor. However. volume was un- usually low while prices were ris- ing. That is hardly reassuring to those who would like to see an end to the selling.

CLEVELAND (AP)—Steel ingots rolled out of mills at 73 per cent of the nations rated capacity last week. I jump of two points, Steel magazine said today.

Pointing out that was just 2.5 less than the record established in January for this year, the metal- working lournal added that "some people think the ingot rate is about as high as it will go for a while" but others “who have been rather pessimistic are exhibiting some op- timisni."
