His partner is Cecil Rhodes, the South African imperialist, and ex- ploiter, but Rhodes is only an inci- dent in the diamond line when com- pared with Beit. Rhodes was a late comer, and the ingenious German bad all but completed the work of organization when the Hon. ;Cecil put in his appearance at Kimberley.

Mr. Beit is 47 years old. His father was a well-to-do merchant in
