And the parents. who most likely did not have much schooling themselves and who have the usual American fctishyworship of formal education and who adore Mamie or Sadie or Janie, are anxious to "7 t '

give her every advantage, but to send her off to college will be at the ex- pense of a great sacrifice of the entire family. Business hasn't been good in the grocery trade or the factory this last year. Salaries have been cut, and if Sadie or Mamie 0r Janie goes to college it will mean that father will have to work longer hours and do without the vacation that he so sadly needs and that he will have to wear his old overcoat another year. And mother will have to turn off the maid and do her own house- work and cut the butcher's bill down to the bone and postpone the c-per- atlon that might save her life and drop out of her clubs and the younger children will have to be denied every possible luxury and indulgence.

Now if Mamie or Sadie or Janie was an intellectual young woman‘: with a high, knobby forehead and had an insatiable thirst for learning there would be justification for her parents working their fingers to thc bone and denying themselves in order to give hcr every opportunity ioi the higher education. She may be a genius who will pay them back a ihousandfold for their sacrifices. At any rate, they have opcned thr- door of opportunity to hcr and have given hcr a chance at the intellect- ual hie which she craves.

BBIDUS CAKE

Two cups of butter, 4 cups sugar, 2 cups milk, 10 egg-whit". 8 @198 flour, 12 teaspoons baking powder.

Cream the butter and bent in the sugar gradually; I-dd the milk, al- ternately, with the flour and baking powder, and, lastly, the egg-whites. beaten very light. Bake in two pans about i4 by l4 inches, and 3 inches deep. when baked and removed from the pan, take one corner of the cake for the point of a heart, lay on a pattern, and with sharp knife W! the cake to the pattern, using the pieces cut from cake to fill out the top. Fasten the pieces tofletllfil‘ with frosting and put the two layers to- gether with trusting. Then cover the whole cake and decorate with boil- ed frosting, steamed over boiling water until it will hold its shape.

This being the case, it. does seem that sensible men and women might dispassionately-consider whether it is worth while to impoverish them- selves and work themselves to death sending ofi to college pretty little fluffy-ruffles girls that anybody can see with half an eye are destined to espouse men and not careers and who could be much better prepared for , the lives they are to lead by going into mother's kitchen or a business oflice than they are by~going~to college.

Certainly a-poll-cge diploma is nohelp in getting a husband. Quite the contrary. Recently compiled statistics show that in England only 12 per cent of the women who ‘take up medical work get married, while in this country the women who achieve high academic honors remain un- i married to the extent of ~80 per cent. So, the more a woman is entitled‘ to write M. A.’ after her-name the less likely she is to be called Ma. And every woman. no matter what else she attains, finds life cinders, ashes and dust unless it gives her love and husband and children.

It is folly to- deny that men do not care for very highly educated women. They may not want Dumb Doras for wives, but assuredly they do not desire wives who know more than they do. and inasmuch as tho great majority of American mango to work as soon as they finish high strip, it is inevitable that they should prefer girls to whom they are ora- ' school and thereafter read little except the stock market and the comic cles rather. than those who look-dowrrupon them from the intellectual heights.

Nor does a college education fit a. girl for being a wife and mother as well as ‘the practical experience she would get at home or in business. She may have majored in chemistry, but ‘that won't enable her to make bread that is light. and fluffy. She may have taken a prize in mathematics, but that won't help her to get a hundred cents out of a dollar. as she would have learned to do had she earned her own living. Moreover. just be- cause she is highly educated it is apt to make her discontented ivith domestic life and cause her to feel that she is wasting her time in wash- ing baby bottles and cooking dinner for a mere husband.

All of which merely leads us to saying that it is foolish for parents
